Beyond the Ferns

Soap inspired by nature, created with intention.

Beyond the Ferns was born from maker Gillian Kavanagh’s love of nature, creativity and the sense of calm found among the trees.

The name was inspired by a painting she created when her youngest child was three, and by the many woodland walks that brought moments of calm, wonder and connection during those early years of raising her children. Leaving the forest always felt like a mindful cleanse — a feeling she wanted to capture in her soaps.

Each batch of Beyond the Ferns soap is thoughtfully handcrafted, bringing together natural inspiration, beautiful colours, textures and uplifting scents. Like a painting, every bar is created with care and intention, designed to turn an everyday ritual into a moment of calm.

A little piece of nature, made to help you pause, breathe and reconnect.

Carmel Grant is the designer behind the Colour & Style paper doll books. She is a digital artist based in Waterford City, Ireland.

During the first COVID-19 lockdown, Carmel found comfort in watching nostalgic films from the 1980s and 1990s. Inspired by childhood memories—and aware that families were adjusting to home learning and long days indoors—she began creating free printable paper dolls to spark creativity and fun.

The positive response from parents and children encouraged Carmel to keep designing. She loves creating these books, knowing they can give children a break from screens while inspiring imaginative, creative, and playful moments.

Her goal is simple: to bring a little joy, imagination, and nostalgia into children’s lives—one paper doll at a time!

Karen was born in Dublin in 1960 and educated in Mount Temple. She counts herself lucky to live and work in the beautiful seaside town of Skerries, Co. Dublin.

Mainly self-taught, she has a painted all her life, the catalyst being the gift of oil paints from her sister at an early age.

Following a painting workshop in Holland, plein air influenced her work, with inspiration around every corner of Skerries and beyond. The daily painting movement inspires her small still life paintings in oil of local scenery and kitchen still lives. Sharlene fell in love with porcelain and ceramic relief tile art at the University of Ulster, Belfast. This affinity, together with a lifelong love of beach combing for treasures, results in the designs that inspire her collections today. The pieces are intentionally brightly coloured, reflecting a contentment and meaningful enjoyment of a scene or memory.

Every piece has a history, a memory or a sense of place within — from her relationship with the coastline of her home, to the adventure days exploring the remarkable landscape of Ireland, Sharlene captures these moments in fine porcelain, glass shards, rich gold, ocean hues and humble clay.

All Sharlene’s work is handmade, from start to finish, by Sharlene in her studio in Coolaney, Co. Sligo

Fireworks suggest celebrations, and that’s Grace’s thought behind this gorgeous colourful candle sconce. Whether standing on a bright shelf or window sill, or with a tea light candle behind it on a mantlepiece, this piece of glass will always be a reminder of the celebration it commemorates.

Each one is made individually, so no two are exactly the same. They feature two fireworks ‘exploding’ on the surface, with little pops of colourful glass. It measures approximately 5″ x 6″. The candle sconce is presented in a gift box, and will make a beautiful gift to celebrate engagement, wedding, birthday or many other events.

Note, this is designed to stand up, and should not be used as a ‘bridge’ over a tealight.
