Some photos from Friday’s award ceremony, with the special guests of honour the three remaining villagers - Brendan Farragher, Eileen Lydon and John Joe Mullins - who were in the movie and involved in the filming. Wonderful speeches given by Professor Des MacHale the world’s leading expert on The Quiet Man, David Collins renowned film producer who unveiled the plaque on behalf of the European Film Academy, Councillor Damien Ryan, Rose Conway-Walsh TD and Keira Keogh TD, with the star of the show Rev. Diane Matchett who performed the Isle of Innisfree, accompanied by Stephen Murphy. Big news for Cong and film history! 🎬 We are incredibly proud to announce that the European Film Academy has officially designated The Quiet Man Museum a Treasure of European Film Culture, celebrating 75 years since John Ford brought his masterpiece to life in Mayo. ✨
We join an elite global list alongside landmarks like the Trevi Fountain! Former President Michael D. Higgins shared his congratulations, calling the museum a "testament to the enduring power of storytelling."
The official plaque unveiling takes place Friday, 12th June at 4:30 PM right here at the museum. The true guests of honour will be our four remaining local villagers who were extras in the movie and involved in the filming in 1951. 💚

75 years ago today the cameras started rolling in Cong as John Ford began filming The Quiet Man, described by movie critics as a love letter to Ireland, with Cong and counties Mayo and Galway being shot to stardom. The Quiet Man really put Mayo’s little gem of a village firmly in the spotlight when filming started in Cong 75 years ago….and fans are still visiting 75 years later - truly a movie that has stood the test of time!
