Presented by Mr J.P. Connolly, in memory of his brother, J.B. Donnelly, former Town Clerk of the Corporation of Drogheda,

John Cassidy was born at Littlewood, Slane, Co Meath, Ireland, on 1 January 1860. Prior to leaving Ireland, he worked as an apprentice bar tender at the former White Horse Hotel, West Street, Drogheda. It was during this time, early in his career, that he painted the โ€˜Street Sceneโ€™. Subsequently, John Cassidy studied in Dublin and Milan before settling in Manchester where he spent the rest of his life. Many of his sculptures are still to be seen in Manchester including in the John Rylands Library.

The โ€˜Street Scene; is set at the junction of Duke Street and West Street and we can see different social classes juxtaposed: the elegantly dressed woman on the right (identified locally as the โ€˜Lady in Blueโ€™ โ€“ a Miss Plunkett) provides a foil to the woman wearing a plain bonnet, apron and shawl. This latter woman was โ€˜Kate the Navvyโ€™, a well-known character in Drogheda whose life ended tragically following a collision with a quarry cart. Her nickname came from the fact that it was believed that her husband was employed as a navvy on the construction of the Boyne Viaduct (1855). Following his death at work on the Boyne Viaduct Kate took his place: hence Kate the Navvy.

The man in the foreground, engrossed in reading a notice, was known locally as โ€˜Donegan the Poetโ€™ and was a hedge-school master. The man on the extreme right-hand side of the street is reputed to be Patrick Watters, a postman. The young boy playing the squeezebox and hoping for money from the rich lady is identified in old accounts as โ€˜Delaneyโ€™. Finally, the carriage sweeping down West Street towards the Tholsel is driven by John Whearty, a hotel coach-driver at the White Horse Hotel. The view thus presents a pleasing microcosm that is both social and historical record.

Originally from Clones, Co Monaghan, Joanne Cartwright moved to Blackrock, Co Louth in her teenage years. A prolific painter, particularly in recent years, with work ranging from still life to landscape. Painting mainly en plein air in Ireland and abroad.

Locations in the northeast region are often used as subject matter, with the river Boyne and various human settlements of the river valley a source of inspiration for many of Joanneโ€™s paintings. View from the Curly Hole was painted near Townley Hall on a drizzly day in late June, 2025. Lots of grey and darkest greens, occasions of light between clouds highlight summer foliage and the Boyne flows majestically through its own landscape.

Joanne is inspired by nature and environment with an objective to capture through colour and brushwork a moment in time.

Born in Drogheda in 1956, Richard Moore studied Fine Art in Waterford Regional Technical College under Paul Funge and graduated in 1979. He opened and ran The Harvest Gallery in Drogheda, taught Art at Gormanston College, and was Artist in Residence at Droichead Arts Centre. He has exhibited locally and in Dublin, and his work is included in private and public collections.

In 2012, he was awarded a Civic Honour by the Mayor of Drogheda for Services to the Arts. Primarily a landscape artist, Richard has been painting in the Drogheda area for more than 40 years. He is also interested in the Boyne Valley megalithic sites and the relationship between legends and astronomical events.

Growing up, Richard enjoyed life in the outdoors, developing a keen sense of โ€˜lookingโ€™ through his close observation of the natural world. The convent garden, sadly no more, had long been a special place for Richard. In this early painting we see the young artist finding the direction his artistic life was to take. His commitment to working en plein air - directly from life, his dedicated, close exploration of his immediate environment and his love for his home place, all find expression in Sunhouse, Convent Garden.

Only when you have attempted to capture in paint what youโ€™re looking at, do you truly come to see it. Above all, is joy. Joy is gained by discovery; discovery is gained by looking.

To Land: Living Roots Awaken
Curator & Artists' Opening Talk (ISL)

Saturday 23rd May 3.20pm with access to the exhibition from 3pm

The exhibition features artworks from Crawford Art Galleryโ€™s collection by Karen Conway, Barrie Cooke, Dorothy Cross, Stephen Doyle, Anthony Haughey, Katie Holten, John Keating, Fiona Kelly, Anne Kiely and Mary Palmer, Elizabeth Magill, Alice Maher, Frieda Meaney, Nuala Oโ€™Donovan, and John Rainey. The exhibition also features the work of invited artists Dorota Borowa, Tom Climent, James Hayes, and Ciara Oโ€™Connor.

For the opening talk atists Anthony Haughey, Dorota Borowa, Tom Climent, James Hayes, and Ciara Oโ€™Connor will be introduced with contributions from the Artist-Teacher-Researher curatorial team, with contributions from Mary McCarthy, Director, Crawford Art Gallery and Dr Michael Waldron, Curator of Collections & Special Projects at Crawford Art Gallery.

Crawford Art Gallery and Highlanes Gallery proudly present a new strategic touring partnership, To Land: Living Roots Awaken, in collaboration with the Artist-Teacher-Researcher Curatorial Group.

Drawing from the rich collection of Crawford Art Galleryโ€™s contemporary artworks, the exhibition explores how identity is shaped by our relationship with land, history, and memory. We are an island formed by rupture and renewal, rooted in ancient cultures yet continually re-forming in the wake of colonisation. The exhibition conveys the persistence of history in the present, while themes of displacement and the urge to put down roots resonate quietly throughout the selected artworks.

Bringing together painting, printmaking, textile, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture, the exhibition considers our connection to nature and asks how we relate to the world around us.

This is a standing event with cushions available on the steps of the altar for those who need to sit from time to time.

The Artist-Teacher-Researcher (ATR) Curatorial Group are Eileen Brennan, Kieran Gallagher, Bairbre Geraghty, Veronica Lavin, Rรณisรญn Oโ€™Sullivan, and Ciarรกn Power.

Nano Reid was born in Drogheda. The eldest of four children, she grew up above the family pub on the corner of Peter St. and Fair St. She studied in Dublin, Paris and London and developed her own distinct, uncompromising style. Her reputation grew slowly but firmly. She exhibited regularly and was chosen to represent Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1950.

Nano Reidโ€™s work is defined by expressive landscapes, mythic imagination, figurative structure and a deep connection to place. In ๐˜“รฉ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ we experience Reidโ€™s characteristic โ€˜birdโ€™s eye viewโ€™ on a Boyne Valley landscape of deep blues and acidic greens. We see the mast and ribs of a decaying ship. Sirens are calling, warning of danger or calling longingly, and seagulls wheel overhead. It is a fine example of Reidโ€™s distinctive voice, neither fully abstract nor conventionally representational, a mature work from her most confident period.

Highlanes Gallery presented a major exhibition โ€“ Nano Reid: ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ marking the 40th anniversary of the artistโ€™s death in 2021.

Thomas Markey was born in 1885 and spent his working life as a carpenter with the Drogheda Corporation. His passion, though, was art and his work included water colours, oils, pen and ink, and copper etchings. In later life he declared that he had enjoyed drawing for as long as he could remember and he acknowledged that the varied curriculum at Drogheda Technical School had given him some formal grounding as an artist. Indeed, in those early years, he was to encounter in competition another aspiring young Drogheda artist, Nano Reid.

Over the years, Thomas Markey produced a series of pen and ink drawings of Drogheda scenes. His works are recognized as valuable, detailed historical records of early 20th-century Drogheda. In this present scene we have a detailed illustration of the busy, labour-intensive business of off-loading cargo from a ship at Drogheda Port in 1964. In this pre containerised cargo era at Drogheda Port we see goods being loaded loose onto lorries requiring much manual labour in the process. Elsewhere there are stockpiles of coal, stacks of beams and cable reels scattered about hither and tither. This hectic, industrial scene is in contrast to the tranquil, pastoral scene depicted on the other side of the river with the iconic viaduct, high above, straddling both.

Fr. Jack Hanlon was a priest and a painter. He studied painting in Belgium, Spain and Portugal under the influential artist and teacher Andrรฉ Lhote. Fr. Hanlonโ€™s work is characterised by a unique use of colour and light, often leaving areas of white canvas exposed to create a radiant effect. The palette is filled with joyous, vibrant colour reflecting a liberation from the intellectual rigours of his religious life.

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฆ explores themes of freedom, confinement and the human condition. It features an ornate gold bird cage with two melancholic birds creating a striking contrast. The paintingโ€™s colours and minimalist background enhance its emotional impact, symbolising the tension between beauty and entrapment and prompting reflection on personal and societal constraints.

An advocate for modern Irish art, Fr. Hanlon helped establish the Irish Exhibition of Living Art (IELA) in 1943. The IELA provided a platform for artists to challenge traditional norms. His work contributes to Irelandโ€™s cultural identity especially in the context of the newly founded state.

A writer, painter, illustrator and poet, Mervyn Peake was born in Jiangxi Province China in 1911. Moving to England in 1923, he attended Croydon School of Art and Royal Academy School. With regard to his literary output Peake is best known for the Gormenghast Series - a gothic, baroque and deeply imaginative cycle for which he was both author and illustrator. He was a highly accomplished painter with a distinctive expressive line and a fascination with character and atmosphere.

๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ข ๐˜Ž๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ญ is a poignant and haunting study of a little girl. Soft, smudged pastel work, downcast eyes and a sense of inwardness or melancholy is very representative of Peakeโ€™s work as is the hand supporting the chin in a pose of contemplation or weariness.

Pamela Grove, at whose bequest this painting was donated to the Collection, is best known as the sitter and donor behind several artworks now in Irish public collections. The National Gallery of Ireland holds an oil painting and pencil drawings of her by Augustus Edwin John, one of the most important portraitists of the 20th Century. ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ข ๐˜Ž๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ญ is believed to be a study of Pamela Grove as a child.
