The Douglas Hyde Gallery of Contemporary Art

Unique space to see and learn about contemporary art, located on the campus of Trinity College Dublin All are welcome, admission free.

The Douglas Hyde Gallery, founded in 1978, is an independent organization co-funded by Trinity College and the Arts Council. Our exhibition programme includes shows by major contemporary international artists as well as by emerging Irish artists, and we occasionally hold exhibitions of ethnographic and craft artifacts. The Douglas Hyde Gallery publishes books and catalogues that are known and distributed all over the world, and from time to time we host musical events.

Thank you to everyone who visited our exhibitions 'EX/IT:LIFT' by Abbas Zahedi and The Artist's Eye: Bushra Mustafa Dunne, and to those who contributed to our events programme 'Exit what? Lift it how?' in response to the exhibitions. ⁠

In April, artist Abbas Zahedi was joined in conversation by Eomac, a.k.a. Irish composer, DJ and producer, Ian McDonnell, to discuss his exhibition. Discussing the themes and processes behind Zahedi's work, the conversation is available to listen back to on our website.⁠
⁠
The Student Forum hosted a listening session in response to Zahedi's work. Inspired by Ultra-Red’s Five Protocols for Organized Listening, visitors were encouraged to reflect on the artworks in the exhibition through guided exercises in listening and discussion.⁠

We welcomed Palestinian Culture Days Dublin to the gallery for an Open Session in response to EX/IT:LIFT. A dynamic initiative founded by a collective of activists, artists, and intellectuals from both Palestinian and Irish communities, PCD Dublin held a discussion and collective lift.⁠
⁠
In May, Emma Moore gave a special Curator's Tour as part of Dublin by Dusk. Exploring the themes underlying the exhibitions, Emma engaged visitors with the sounds sculptures and activated the exhibition's central work LIFT.⁠

We were delighted to hold an open session with feidhlimidh who invited friends and musicians, including DJ Powerbutton and the horn band 'Ireland', to participate in a collective lift and powerful performances.⁠
⁠
For our final event, Merve Sagit hosted a poetry workshop. Drawing loosely from Sufi poetry, repetition, and reflective storytelling, participants collaborated to create a shared text around themes of grief, healing, and togetherness. ⁠

The DHG is now closed for install until our next opening on 2 June. ⁠

'EX/IT:LIFT' is the first solo exhibition by Abbas Zahedi in Ireland and presents a newly commissioned series of sound sculptures that interrogate bureaucratic systems – administrative, religious, institutional, and militaristic. ⁠

In Gallery 2, for The Artist's Eye, a newly commissioned recorded poem by poet Bushra Mustafa Dunne is played through an LRAD, a long-range accoustic device, sourced by Abbas Zahedi for the exhibition. ⁠

Upcoming Event | Open Session with Merve Sagit⁠

Join us at The Douglas Hyde for a poetry workshop hosted by artist Merve Sagit, in response to our open call for events in association with our current exhibitions by Abbas Zahedi and Bushra Mustafa Dunne. ⁠

This participatory workshop explores poetry, sound, and collective emotional experience through discussion and a shared writing exercise. Join us for an evening hosted by 'feidhlimidh' at The Douglas Hyde in response to our open call for events engaging with our current exhibition 'EX/IT:LIFT' by Abbas Zahedi. During this session, there will be a collective lift of Zahedi's central work 'LIFT'.⁠

Drawing on their research into energy systems and notions of collective and individual agency, feidhlimidh has invited friends with a commitment to community building to participate in the performance of the piece, as well as the artists DJ Powerbutton and Ireland to play music before and after the LIFT session.⁠

Curator's Tour | EX/IT:LIFT⁠

Join us for a special Curator’s Tour of our current exhibitions EX/IT: LIFT by artist Abbas Zahedi and The Artist’s Eye: Bushra Mustafa Dunne, as part of Dublin by Dusk.⁠

For his exhibition, Zahedi presents a newly commissioned body of work that interrogates bureaucratic systems – administrative, religious, institutional, and militaristic. Through a series of sound sculptures, some of which sound alarms, whilst others reflect endless rhythms of manual labour or ritual practice; Zahedi explores the capacity of the gallery space to challenge dominant systems through dialogue and collective action.⁠
⁠
The Artist’s Eye series asks those exhibiting in Gallery 1 to invite an artist of influence to present work in Gallery 2. In this instalment Abbas Zahedi has invited poet Bushra Mustafa Dunne to write and record a new poem. Evoking the Irish mourning tradition of keening, Dunne’s new poem weaves together personal narratives and reflections on militarism, memory, and grief, to imagine shared histories of sonic rituals and communal grieving.⁠

Eomac, Ian McDonnell, is a producer, DJ and label owner. He has released music with Planet Mu, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Bedouin Records, Trilogy Tapes, Killekill and his own Eotrax imprint. He is one half of duos Lakker, noeverything and Lena Andersson.⁠

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for The Student Forum's response to our current exhibition EX/IT: LIFT by Abbas Zahedi. Drawing on Utra-Red's 'Five Protocol's for Organised Listening' the group led a series of listening exercises in response to each artwork.

For the next event in the programme, artist Abbas Zahedi is joined in conversation by producer and label owner Eomac on Tuesday 28 April, 6.30pm.
