The Douglas Hyde Gallery of Contemporary Art

Unique space to see and learn about contemporary art, located on the campus of Trinity College Dublin All are welcome, admission free.

The Douglas Hyde Gallery, founded in 1978, is an independent organization co-funded by Trinity College and the Arts Council. Our exhibition programme includes shows by major contemporary international artists as well as by emerging Irish artists, and we occasionally hold exhibitions of ethnographic and craft artifacts. The Douglas Hyde Gallery publishes books and catalogues that are known and distributed all over the world, and from time to time we host musical events.

Upcoming Events | September⁠

As we enter the final weeks of Nour Jaouda's Matters of time, we have lots of exciting events to look forward to in the Gallery this month.⁠
⁠
Next Wednesday, September 9th at 6:30pm Director Georgina Jackson will be joined in conversation by artist Nour Jaouda to discuss her first solo exhibition in Ireland. ⁠
⁠
On Culture Night, Friday 18th September, we will witness the glorious return of Miss Powder Vacuum - an evening of live music and performance to crown Ireland's ultimate diva. ⁠The event is now fully booked, but keep an eye out for limited tickets should they become available.⁠
⁠
Thursday, September 24th will see the opening of the 2026 Student Forum Exhibition at 6pm. This group of students and recent graduates will present and curate their work in the Gallery from September 24-28th. Visitors will be treated to live music and hospitality on the evening, supported by Dublin by Dusk. ⁠

Artist Talk | Nour Jaouda in Conversation with Georgina Jackson⁠
⁠
Next Wednesday at 6:30pm, we are delighted to welcome Nour Jaouda back to the Gallery for a special conversation with Director Georgina Jackson. ⁠
⁠
Nour Jaouda lives and works in Cairo and London, and the forms, colours and motifs within her intricately textured surfaces gesture towards different encounters across time and space, drawing on the artist’s childhood in Libya and experiences of living between these two cities. Organic and geometric forms reveal themselves within her layered topographies, evoking images both real and imagined: spectral presences and absences within the shadows of memory.⁠

Jaouda will discuss her first solo exhibition in Ireland, Matters of time, which remains open until Sunday, September 13th. ⁠

How do plants inform our ideas of place and time, and hold memories of landscapes?⁠
⁠
Nour Jaouda's exhibition Matters of time, currently on display in Gallery 1, uses abstracted fragments of botanical forms to explore how plant life can shape personal memory and cultural experiences. ⁠
⁠
Tomorrow at 7pm, Curator of Trinity Herbarium and Assistant Professor of Botany Dr Peter Moonlight will deliver a fascinating insight into the plants which inspired Jaouda's sculptural textile works. With reference to the collection of plant specimens at the Trinity Herbarium, the complex connections between plants, places, and memory will be explored.⁠

Held in the Botany Lecture Theatre at Trinity College Dublin, this lecture is presented as part of Dublin by Dusk, an initiative which sees spaces open later on the last Thursday of the month. ⁠

In this instalment of The Artist's Eye, where an artist exhibiting in Gallery 1 invites an artist of influence to present work in Gallery 2, Nour Jaouda has invited artist Tamara Kalo.⁠
⁠
Working across photography, sculpture, performance, film, and textile, Tamara Kalo’s practice engages image-making as an alchemical gesture of ritual and remembrance. Kalo exhibits her work the only body that can hold our world’s grief (2025) commissioned by Beirut Art Centre. Kalo’s installation examines collective grief as a durational condition, embedded in both the landscape and the body.⁠
⁠
At the centre of the installation is a lumen photograph, fragmented across twenty sheets of silver gelatin paper which have been stitched together by the artist. Capturing a view of the Mediterranean Sea, the photograph was made with a camera obscura that Kalo set up in a vacant building overlooking the corniche in the coastal city of Saida, Lebanon. Exposed to the changing light over three days, the image formation followed the timeline of a traditional mourning period, tracking the transition from loss to release.⁠

August is a busy month as Nour Jaouda's exhibition Matters of time continues in Gallery 1, alongside The Artist's Eye: Tamara Kalo in Gallery 2. ⁠

On August 18 at 12pm, artist Holly Pickering will host an Audio Described tour of the current exhibition. While made with Blind and partially sighted visitors in mind, the tour is open to everyone. Booking is free through the link in our bio. ⁠

The Student Forum will lead a special collaging workshop in the Gallery on Wednesday, August 19 at 7pm, responding to the layered textile works in the Gallery space.⁠
⁠
On Thursday, August 27 at 7pm, Curator of Trinity Herbarium and Assistant Professor in Botany Dr Peter Moonlight will discuss the plant forms referenced in Nour Jaouda's exhibition. This event is presented as part of Dublin by Dusk. ⁠
