It was wonderful to see such a great crowd in Glasnevin Cemetery celebrating Ulysses and James Joyce! Special thanks to the Joycestagers for their amazing performance of the Hades episode of Ulysses.

“When I die, Dublin will be written in my heart” - James Joyce

While Joyce may be buried in Zurich, his family are laid to rest in Glasnevin Cemetery. Ultan visits their grave and chats about some of the many Joycean connections to the cemetery.

Glasnevin Cemetery has been celebrating Bloomsday since 2010 and it is now a firm favourite for Bloomsday pilgrims. On June 16th 1904, Glasnevin was the venue for the funeral of the fictional Paddy Dignam, attended by Joyce’s protagonist Leopold Bloom in Ulysses.

This year to celebrate this historic date, Experience Glasnevin will host a performance of the ‘Hades’ episode of Ulysses performed by the Joycestagers and a Joycean tour of the cemetery itself. Explore the ‘underworld’ of Ulysses in one of the most popular Bloomsday events!

The Bloomsday Festival takes place on 11-16 June 2026. It is organised by The James Joyce Centre in partnership with Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.
