The 7-mile crossing. ⛴️

Before boarding the Jeanie Johnston, Irish emigrants faced another precarious journey.

By the mid-19th century, silting meant that large vessels like the Jeanie Johnston could rarely reach Blennerville, then the port of Tralee.

Instead, ships anchored at Fenit, around seven miles away, in the shelter of the Samphire Islands.

With no pier yet built at Fenit, passengers and cargo were transported across the bay in smaller boats known as lighters, adding more uncertainty to an already life changing voyage.

It’s a powerful reminder that emigration wasn’t just about crossing the ocean. It began long before departure.

We were honoured to welcome Jim Callery, founder of the National Famine Museum in Strokestown, which is supported by the Irish Heritage Trust, as he recalled his experience of sailing on this replica ship 22 years ago.

🚢 He shared powerful reflections on the long, arduous journey, the amazing people he met along the way, and how the voyage deepened his understanding and empathy for those who travelled aboard the original ship, fleeing the Famine.

We recorded many of these stories and look forward to sharing them with you soon.

The Jeanie Johnston is remembered as a miracle ship, but her story did not end when she stopped transporting passengers during the Famine.

⛴️ On her final voyage in 1858, while carrying cargo, she began to slowly sink, forcing the crew to tie themselves to the masts in a desperate fight for survival.

Their incredible resilience kept them alive until they could be rescued, once again proving how incredible this ship was.

Visit The Jeanie Johnston today to learn more about her amazing track record.
