A man who needs no introduction, but he always deserves a toast.

Happy birthday, Oscar Wilde, born in Dublin on 16 October 1854.

On what would have been his 172nd birthday, we remember a writer whose wit and wisdom have left an indelible mark on Irish literature, and on the world at large.

Swipe for one of his most-loved lines from Lady Windermere’s Fan: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

If you haven’t yet had a chance to experience De Profundis, the film installation here at MoLI, make it snappy! The exhibition closes at the end of the month.

Join us on Friday, 6 November for First Fridays, presented in partnership with Dublin Book Festival! The museum will be open late from 6pm until 9pm, with free admission and special literary events throughout the evening.

6.30pm | Discussion: If This Be Magic. Daniel Hahn's deep dive into Shakespeare-in-translation, from Chinese to Italian, Turkish to Dutch, all asking: if the language changes, is it still Shakespeare? Hahn joins Sinéad Mac Aodha, Director of Literature Ireland, in conversation.

8pm | Discussion: Girlhood Remixed. Join three writers exploring girlhood and womanhood: Chandrika Narayanan-Mohan (The Salt of Something) on love and the city, Jessica Traynor (New Arcana) on grief and friendship via Tarot, and Rosamund Taylor (Filly), a q***r coming-of-age verse novel. In conversation with Ellen Orchard.

The Irish ghost story travels, but it never quite leaves home.

Join us for the MoLI Samhain Lecture with Dr Katie Mishler, who explores how Irish folk horror crosses borders while staying rooted in place and cultural memory, from graverobbers and supernatural stalkers to the wailing banshee.

🗓 Tuesday, 27 October, 6.30pm
🎟 €10, free for MoLI Members. Tickets via the link in our bio.

Dr Katie Mishler is a curator, writer, and scholar of supernatural writing, and the editor of A Visit from the Banshee (MoLI Editions, 2024), which this lecture accompanies.

As the veil thins at Samhain, join us for a journey through the hidden folklore, horrors and spirits of our house on St Stephen's Green. Running daily from Saturday 24 to Saturday 31 October, 2pm-3pm, this is your chance to explore MoLI's darker side this Samhain.

You'll encounter Burn-Chapel Whaley and the Hellfire Club, whose wild history is tied to this very building, and come face-to-face with the death masks of Patrick Kavanagh and Brendan Behan. Along the way, we'll trace the Irish roots of Dracula and explore the changelings, fairy hills and ghost stories that run through Irish writing. And if you feel a chill on the landing, well, we did warn you.

Tickets are €18. Children aged 12 and under go free when accompanied by a paying adult. Places are strictly limited, so book now at the link in our bio!

Can’t make it to the museum? Our MoLI in the Classroom workshops are delivered online in partnership with Aercap, bringing MoLI’s learning programme to young people across the island.

Through wordplay, creative writing and a mix of individual and group activities, students are encouraged to explore their creativity in a fun and engaging way.

Workshops are free and available during term time for primary students from third to sixth class, and secondary students from first to fourth year, as well as Youthreach and Training Centres.

Sessions take place on Thursdays and can be booked through our live online calendar. Secondary school workshops can also be scheduled around class periods.
