Cleary's Pub, Amiens Street
We were delighted last week to mount a reproduction of Michael Collins 1922 portrait by Leo Whelan in Cleary's Pub in Amiens Street. This wonderful pub, where Collins regularly held meetings and often slept upstairs with a price on his head, is like stepping back in time and has been beautifully preserved with so much memorabilia of the struggle for Independence. Cleary's must now be the only pub in Dublin which has on view the only two paintings of Collins which he sat for ; A original print of Lavery's 1922 painting which Collins sat for in London during the Treaty negotiations (there is also a original print Lavery's 1922 superb painting of Arthur Griffith) and now Leo Whelan's painting of Collins which he sat for in Dawson street on 17th & 20th February 1922. Personally, I believe the lifesize Whelan painting is the greatest likeness to Collins but each painting its merits however you can now make your own mind up over one of the best pints of Guinness in Dublin...

The Landmark, Wexford Street

We were delighted to decorate the walls of The Landmark pub on Wexford Street, with a series of revolutionary portraits, the 1916 Proclamation and military public notices, as well as an 17th & 18th century prints of Leinster and Dublin city.

This beautifully renovated interior of this building invites us to step back in time, considering both the human figures who formed part of the Irish resistance, in addition to the maps and public notices which heralded unprecedented disruption and change to Irish, and especially Dublin society, during and after the Easter Rising.

The Landmark has been restored to its former glory in an effort to place it at the heart of the Wexford Street community again. Owned and operated by a team of faces familiar to The Wexford Street area, you’ll be guaranteed an excellent pint and tasty grub while you take in Ireland’s revolutionary history

1916 Leaders’ Portraits (2 of 2):

Which of these names or faces do you recognise? See below in order of appearance:

Micheál Ó hAnnracháin, proof-reader & printer for Conradh na Gaeilge and 2nd in command of the Volunteers’ 2nd battalion under MacDonagh until MacBride unexpectedly took that role on Easter Monday (stationed at Jacob's Biscuit Factory).

Seán Heuston, member of Fianna Éireann, held the Mendicity Institution on the River Liffey for over two days with about 20 volunteers.

Constance Markievicz, suffragate, socialist and the first woman elected to the British Parliament in Westminister where she was an abstentionist MP. Founding member of Fianna Éireann, Cumann na mBan and the Irish Citizen Army, Markievicz fought in St Stephen's Green, with the ICA before moving to The Royal College of Surgeons.

William J Pearse, artist, sculptor and brother of Pádraig, with whom he fought in the GPO on Easter week.

Joseph Plunkett, one of the original members of the IRB Military Committee, was stationed at the GPO alongside Collins, who was his aide de camp. Plunkett was married to Grace Gifford just seven hours before his ex*****on.

Con Colbert, member of Conradh na Gaeilge, the IRB and the Volunteers, as well as bodyguard for Thomas Clarke. Colbert fought at Watkin's Brewery, Jameson's Distillery and Marrowbone Lane.

1916 Leaders’ Portraits (1 of 2):

Take a moment to look at these framed 1916 leaders’ portraits collected and preserved by Martin A. Walton in honour of those who fought for the Easter Rising.

In order of appearance:

Pádraig Pearse, founder of Scoil Éanna and Commander-in-Chief of the Irish Volunteers. Pearse read the Proclamation of the Republic outside the General Post Office on Easter Monday 1916 and was seen by many as the embodiment of the rebellion.

James Connolly, trail-blazing socialist, trade union leader and founder of the Irish Labour Party. Connolly commanded the Irish Citizen Army throughout the rising.

Thomas J. Clarke, treasurer of the IRB and, at the insistence of the other signatories, the first signatory to the Proclamation. Clarke was arguably the person most responsible for the 1916 Easter Rising having being behind bringing Pearse and other key members on to the Supreme Council of the IRB .

Seán MacDiarmada, Military Committee member of the IRB. MacDiarmada worked in the Provisional Government within the GPO during Easter week.

Thomas MacDonagh, assistant headmaster at Scoil Éanna and commandant of the Dublin Brigade stationed at Jacobs Factory.

Edward Daly, commandant of the Irish Volunteers’ 1st battalion stationed in the Four Courts and areas Northwest of the city centre.

Éamonn Ceannt, Director of Communications for the Irish Volunteers, stationed at the South Dublin Union.

John MacBride, a close friend to Arthur Griffith and a militant republican. MacBride only joined forces on the day of the Rising with the rebels upon seeing Thomas MacDonagh in full uniform on Grafton Street leading his batallion.

Michael Joseph O'Rahilly, member of the Irish Volunteers & Conradh na Gaeilge, was killed in a charge on a British machine gun post covering the retreat from the Dublin GPO.

We had a wonderful exhibition last weekend - thanks to all who travelled far and wide to make it! If you missed it, it's on again this weekend Sat/Sun 12-6pm, A41EW71 but here's a taster of what's on view - lots of revolutionary memorabilia and antiquarian Irish maps, particularly of North Dublin, as well as a amazing selection of 1830's Ordnance Survey maps of the counties of Ireland. A really rare opportunity to see these aspects of a unique collection on full display.
