This week's Queally's interview is with Tommy Keane. Born in Waterford City, Tommy took up the pipes in his early twenties after meeting local piper Tommy Kearney. He learned further piping skills from Brian Gallagher, Pat Mitchell and Liam O’Flynn, and is also influenced by recordings of Willie Clancy, Séamus Ennis and Tommy Reck. We’ve had many special nights of music in Miltown Malbay over the years, and I think we’ll look back on last night as one for the history books.

Two musical giants — Derek Hickey & Dermot Byrne — who never get the chance to perform together in a formal duet setting, coming together to release a world of music from their accordions (and fiddles).

A sold out room full of musicians tells you all you need to know about the respect these two are held in — and the appetite that exists for smaller, close-up listening room concerts.

Delighted as well to have welcomed them into Queally’s earlier in the day for our Music & Conversation series.

ITMA was saddened to learn of the passing of Eilish Byrne (née Moore) one month ago.

An acclaimed singer and a longtime champion of social justice causes, Eilish was an organiser of the Dublin Folk Festival in the 1970s and went on to organise folk clubs in Dublin such as The Meeting Place and Mother Redcaps in the 1980s-90s. She was a member of the group Fallen Angels, who toured internationally and released two albums in the 1990s.

ITMA recorded an interview with Eilish in 2009. Watch the full interview: https://youtu.be/TBOmZzOoaE0?si=dUoBhipYJ62yJUvZ

ITMA was saddened to hear of the passing of Desi Wilkinson. Born and raised in Belfast, Desi was a terrific musician, researcher and a great supporter and mentor to younger players.

A flute and whistle player and singer, Desi was influenced from a young age by fellow Ulster musicians Tommy Gunn, Charlie O'Neill and Cathal McConnell. Desi also regularly visited Fermanagh and picked up tunes from older generations of players there like Eddie Duffy and Mick Hoy. He recorded three solo albums and was a member of the internationally acclaimed group Cran.

ITMA recorded an interview with Desi Wilkinson in January 2023 as part of our Music During the Troubles collecting project. The interview was conducted by fellow flute player Barry Kerr. You can watch it in full here: https://youtu.be/UDqFAWupCuE?si=WQXjjttMeOKxVXDD

Dermot Byrne will be playing with Derek Hickey in a rare duet setting this Saturday as part of our new Down the Back Lane acoustic concert series in Miltown Malbay. Both musicians are widely celebrated in their own right, but are seldom heard performing together, making this a unique opportunity to experience their combined artistry up close.

Tickets are sold out, but you can join the wait list here: https://www.itma.ie/events/down-the-back-lane/
