In this article, Christina Kennedy, ( ) Head of Collections at IMMA, explores two of her highlights from our current exhibition IMMA Collection: Art as Agency, Lucian Freud’s ‘Bella and Esther’ (1987) and Siobhán Hapaska’s ‘the recent incarnation of two advanced souls’ (2012).

Reflecting on the dialogue between the two works, Christina shares:

“I seek to bring artworks into new juxtapositions where suddenly something magic happens, something else happens and they reveal more. We see this in the ‘dialogue’ that emerges between Siobhán Hapaska’s the recent incarnation of two advanced souls, 2012 and Lucian Freud’s Bella and Esther, 1987- 88.”

“Observe the young olive tree root-balls that slowly move in opposite directions along the parallel polished beams that bridge the space between the complex of steel pipes and bolts that are permanently clamping the older boughs”
“Then turn and lift your gaze to the framed painting on the wall opposite where two sisters lie, arms and legs akimbo… as they hold the gaze of their father Lucian Freud while he painted them and whose eyes are now ours.”

Check out our new Earth Rising Podcast Series!

Drawing on recordings from Earth Rising 2025, this new podcast opens up the conversations, ideas and moments that unfolded across the festival weekend. The series brings together talks and discussions exploring climate, culture and collective action, alongside sound bites captured across the festival campus, from quiet reflections to shared moments of energy and debate.

In our first episode of the series, ‘Making Kin’, we question what if responding to the climate crisis is less about individual action and more about rebuilding connection? Speakers reflect on how communities, institutions and cultural spaces can open up to support shared action and care.

Featuring a keynote talk from author Jon Alexander ( ) followed by a panel discussion with, Easkey Britton ( surfer, ecologist, and author), Aisling McCarthy (founder AllAboutFolk) and Seán McCabe (Head of Climate Justice and Sustainability, Bohemians FC ) and chaired by Aoife Barry ( ).

Join us on Thursday 28 May at 6pm for a screening preceded by a live overture performed by acclaimed cellist Kevin Murphy, featuring themes from his soundtrack for the film.

‘North Circular’ is a documentary musical shot in black-and-white that explores the history, music, and streetscapes of this iconic route, touching on themes from colonialism and mental health to women’s liberation.

Alongside the screening, the exhibition ‘Fisherwoman, Fisherwoman’ will open late until 8pm. IMMA’s Fruition café van will be open in the courtyard for refreshments and treats.

Dublin by Dusk is a new city wide initiative that invites you to experience Dublin city as it stays open late on the last Thursday of every month. 'North Circular' will be screened on Living Canvas at IMMA, Europe’s largest digital outdoor art screen presented at IMMA by IPUT Real Estate.

IMMA is proud to take part in the celebrations to mark the centenary of the visionary artist Aubrey Williams, whose work ‘Painting III’ (1962) is currently on display as part of our exhibition IMMA Collection: Art as Agency.

Born in Guyana in 1926, Williams developed a powerful visual language that moved between abstraction and figuration, grounded in a profound awareness of humanity’s relationship to the environment, history and the cosmos. After moving to London to attend St Martin’s School of Art in 1952, he became a founding member of the Caribbean Artists Movement — a pivotal network of artists and intellectuals who reshaped the city’s cultural landscape.

Spanning ecology, cosmology and pre-colonial histories, his visionary work continues to resonate powerfully. We honour an artist whose vision continues to resonate.
