SCENES FROM FINNEGAN'S WAKE was performed for the first time on stage in April 1955 at The Poet’s Theatre Workshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Tom Clancy played many roles in this production, though none of the actors are credited on the poster.

The production was adapted and directed by Irish playwright and novelist Mary Manning. She successfully distilled Joyce's massive, circular dreamscape into a highly musical, entertaining two-hour stage performance.

Before finding worldwide fame as a folk singer, Tom Clancy was primarily a stage and television actor living in New York City. He was cast by Manning and delivered a highly praised performance in this 1955 production, which helped solidify his reputation as a premier interpreter of complex Irish literary works.

The crossover between the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem’s theatre work and their folk singing careers is perfectly captured by the traditional Irish music-hall ballad "Tim Finnegan's Wake" --a 19th-century song about a labourer who seemingly dies and is comically resurrected by spilled whiskey at his own wake. This song was the literal inspiration behind James Joyce's novel.

The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem and various formations of the group that followed, recorded that song which became one of the definitive staples of their live concert sets and albums.
