An online wellness feed. A nineteenth-century medical fraud. What connects them? Artist Beth Fox invites us to look closer.
Working across installation, drawing and moving image, Beth explores the strange textures of life online and offline. Drawing on personal essays and lived experience, her work brings together labour, anxiety and absurdity — asking how the systems around us shape our behaviour, often without us noticing.
Her experimental art film ** Grateful Patients ** opens our Transmissions series at The Courthouse Gallery & Studios on 9 October.
Presented across two screens, the work places the rise of anti-medicine disinformation in online wellness spaces alongside the story of a nineteenth-century medical charlatan whose patients remained loyal even after he was exposed as a fraud.
Different centuries. Uncomfortably familiar patterns.
At the heart of the work is a question that reaches far beyond either story: why can a comforting lie hold more power than the evidence in front of us?

What makes a comforting lie so difficult to let go of — even when the evidence tells another story?
Beth Fox’s Grateful Patients brings two unsettling worlds into conversation. On one screen, anti-medicine disinformation takes hold in online wellness spaces. On the other, a nineteenth-century medical charlatan retains the loyalty of his patients — despite being exposed as a fraud.
Different centuries. Different platforms. Uncomfortably familiar patterns.
Presented as a two-channel film installation, the work explores the tangled relationship between belief, trust and evidence. Who do we believe? Why do certain stories take hold? And how much of what we think is our own?
Opening 9 October at The Courthouse Gallery & Studios, Fox’s presentation launches Transmissions, a series exploring how the images, messages and virtual identities circulating around us quietly shape our lives.

Today was such a huge success, with a full house for Conor Walton's artist talk! We’re delighted that Conor has kindly agreed to give an artist tour of his current exhibition tomorrow at 12 noon at The Courthouse Gallery & Studios, Ennistymon.
This is a fantastic opportunity to hear directly from an exceptional painter and gain an insight into the ideas and artistic practice behind his work.

The CHG&S Annual Christmas Craft Market 2026 — Vendor Applications Open!

We’re inviting applications for our Christmas Market at The Courthouse Gallery & Studios, Ennistymon — and we’d love to hear from you!

We will be welcoming visitors to our beautiful Georgian building on Friday 4th 1.00 pm - 8 pm & Saturday 5th December, 11 am - 6 pm 2025 (times tbc).

We’re looking for authentic, locally made products, thoughtful craftsmanship and responsibly sourced materials. From original art to handmade gifts, we want stalls that reflect the creativity, skill and care of the people behind them.

✨ Authenticity matters. Our focus is on genuine handmade and artisan products, not mass-produced resale items.

THE NCHS TALKS ARE BACK!

We’re delighted that it’s that time of year again — the hugely popular North Clare Historical Society Autumn/Winter Talks are returning to the Courthouse!

The first talk of the new series takes place on Monday 28 September at 8pm, with guest speaker Martin Barry.

A Focal Point for a Community for 180 Years
St. Columba’s Catholic Church, Clouna 1846–2026

In 2026, St. Columba’s Church in Clouna celebrates 180 years at the heart of its community.

Martin’s talk will explore the story of the church and surrounding area across those 180 years, recounting stories of famine, emigration, local organisation, fighting spirit, sporting endeavour and musical prowess — a place where generations of people worked, played, endured and enjoyed life.

Martin Barry comes from the townland of Drinagh, around six miles from Ennistymon, and has a lifelong interest in local history. He holds an honours degree from the University of Limerick, where he majored in history, has contributed articles to The Other Clare, and currently works as a tutor with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, focusing on history and heritage.

A lovely moment from the opening night of Denis Buckley’s film at the Courthouse Gallery ❤️

Our Director, Éanna Byrt, with his father Enda, alongside the wonderful Kathry Comber — the Queen of the Courthouse herself! 👑

Denis Buckley’s film was screened outside the Courthouse, making for a very special evening of art, film, conversation and community right in the heart of Ennistymon.

There’s something particularly lovely about nights like this — familiar faces, family, artists and friends all coming together around the gallery.

A wonderful night at the Courthouse. 🎬✨

A little piece of Courthouse history is being brought back to life.

Part of the historic railings outside The Courthouse Gallery & Studios, believed to date from around 1780, is currently undergoing careful restoration.

We’re delighted to see the incredible restorative work being carried out by blacksmith artist Steve Quinn, who is using traditional skills and craftsmanship to repair and preserve this beautiful piece of Ennistymon’s architectural heritage.

It’s wonderful to watch something that has stood here for almost 250 years receive the care and attention it deserves — ready to remain part of the Courthouse for many more years to come.

A huge thank you to Steve for the skill, patience and artistry involved in this very special restoration. 🔨✨

No Woman is an Island by Ró Stack
Friday 18th September | 8pm.

No Woman is an Island, a wry solo performance about woman’s tireless pursuit of alone time, comes to Courthouse Gallery Ennistymon this Culture Night, Friday 18th September, at 8pm. Written and performed by Ennistymon native Róisín Stack, the piece sold-out its previous runs in Galway and Dublin Theatre Festival 2023 and plays Ennistymon as part of a tour encompassing Galway, Limerick, Kerry, Dublin and Edinburgh. The Culture Night performance is free to attend but capacity is limited for this special gallery version of the production.

‘It’s brilliant to be presenting the work at home in Ennistymon,’ said Stack who lives only a few doors down from the gallery. ‘The piece was developed here with the support of Ennistymon Community Centre in 2023 and I’ve since been working on new projects in the Courthouse Gallery as one of their Associate Member Artists, so it’s great to be showing a full production here on Culture Night.’ The piece, which chronicles the process of making a performance intercut with scenes from a marriage and a chronology of solitude, went on to critical acclaim with the Irish Times declaring it ‘not to be missed.’

No Woman is an Island is part stand-up, part lecture, part confessional. Inspired by auto-fiction, in which theory is blended with personal narrative, the piece gives a history of female solitude from a creative and spiritual perspective. This history is intercut with vignettes from a relationship, insights into the creative process, projected quotes from great women thinkers, and dance parties set to techno.

The event is free to attend and no booking is required but it should be noted that unlike other Culture Night events, audiences cannot be readmitted should they leave the gallery at any point.
