Delighted to have seen our colleague John Tarpey, chairman and founder of Kilskeagh Heritage Committee, receive the "Best Contribution to Heritage 2026" Galway County Council Cathaoirleach award last Friday night. The well deserved award honours his tireless and important work over the last three years surrounding the rediscovery and preservation of the Old Kilskeagh Church and Graveyard site. We joined this project three years ago as archaeologist, working with John and ecologist John Lusby to compile archaeological and ecological impact reports for the site of an old church and graveyard which was known to the area but which had been inaccessible and totally overgrown for half a century. Three years later - following hundreds of hours of manual clearance work by John and local volunteers, continuing archaeological and ecological supervision and research, grant assistance by The Heritage Council, and recent Lidar work by Paul Naessens - we now know that John's work has led to the discovery of an extremely significant medieval archaeological landscape and early modern complex which was previously unrecorded in the area. It's a privilege to be part of the team on this project as we continue to uncover the stories of this important site into the future.

A site visit to the wonderful Maria Edgeworth Centre in Longford last week to begin work on creating a primary school resource pack for the museum. I had the chance to shadow a local school tour visiting that day, and to see first-hand what aspects of the Edgeworth history engaged and interested children at a primary school level. The museum is located in the original Edgeworthstown schoolhouse from 1840, and children were fascinated to learn of the difference between teaching and education in the nineteenth century compared to today - writing on slates, filling the class inkwells, bringing turf to school for the stove, different classrooms for boys and girls, and teachers using a cane for discipline!

I'm delighted to be working on the resource with the Centre - the Edgeworth family were famous for their promotion of education for all children, and creating a free school resource which will be available for use by all Longford schools (and beyond!) will help to keep their legacy alive and continue their lifelong commitment to inclusive education. The resource is supported by 2026 funding by The Heritage Council
