800 years of Irish History, under one roof... The Medieval Mile Museum is located in the heart of the city and the centre of Ireland Medieval Mile.

The setting is the 13th century St Mary’s cruciform church and graveyard with its heritage of medieval and renaissance style tombs of national historical significance. We tell the stories of the wealthy merchants who built and attended St Marys church and ruled Kilkenny between 1200 and 1650. The Museum displays Kilkenny’s Civic Treasures, showcasing the Ossory High Crosses and magnificent stone carved tombs and many significant artefacts unearthed during the restoration of this church and surrounding graveyard.

On This Day

In 1066, the Battle of Hastings took place. King Harald was killed which left the throne open for William the Conqueror to become crowned the first Norman King of England on Christmas Day and paved the way for the Norman arrival in Ireland.

Kilkenny's Norman heritage is visible throughout the city from the layout in the streets, to the many fascinating artefacts and tombstones at the Medieval Mile Museum.

2027 has been declared the European Year of the Norman which celebrates 1,000 years since the birth of William the Conqueror and a chain of festivals, events, and special exhibits that will be taking place across Europe. Keep an eye on this space for details about upcoming events and the exciting way the new Museum of Medieval Kilkenny will be taking part in the Year of the Norman!

This Halloween, join us at the Medieval Mile Museum for an afternoon of storytelling, treasure hunts, and medieval crafts! Magic & Mischief returns for a second year and is suitable for ages 5+.

€10 per child

Running at 12.00 pm and 4.00 pm on October 26th, 28th, & 30th, places are limited so make sure to book yours in advance!
