It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of sculptor Maurice McDonagh, one of the pioneering artists whose vision helped shape the legacy of Lough Boora Sculpture Park. Maurice was among the distinguished group of Irish and international artists invited to participate in the inaugural Lough Boora International Sculpture Symposium in 2002, a landmark event that established the foundations of what would become one of Ireland’s most significant environmental sculpture parks. During the symposium, he created two enduring works, Raised Line and Raised Circle, sculptures that drew inspiration from the industrial heritage and unique landscape of the boglands, transforming familiar materials and forms into powerful artistic statements.

Maurice’s work was characterised by clarity, precision, and a deep sensitivity to place. His sculptures at Lough Boora continue to engage visitors, inviting reflection on the relationship between landscape, history, industry, and art. As we remember Maurice, we acknowledge not only his remarkable contribution to the 2002 symposium but also the lasting cultural legacy he leaves behind. His work remains an integral part of the story of Lough Boora, and his artistic vision will continue to inspire future generations who encounter his sculptures in the parklands he helped to shape.

My condolences to Maurice's family, friends, fellow artists, and all who worked with him over the years. His contribution to Lough Boora remains a lasting part of Ireland's sculptural landscape.

Reposing at Doyle’s Funeral Home, Killaveney, Tinahely (Y14 DA52) on Friday evening (29th May) from 5pm to 7pm. A Celebration of Maurice’s life will take place at his home in Rosnastraw (Y14 VY15) on Saturday (30th May) at 12 noon, followed by private family cremation.

All going well there will be additional sculpture installations by international artists at Sculpture in the Parklands in 2026.

Towards the end of last year I found myself in a remarkable spot, one that I had never heard of but was excited to discover. Lough Boora in Co Offaly is the location of one of the most important Mesolithic sites in Ireland, the time of the first human settlement. Fast forward to the twentieth centur...

Great day out for the launch of new sculptures - Regeneration and Light as a Feather. Weather held up and I was joined by Offaly County Council Cathaoirleach John Leahy, OCC Chief Executive Anne Marie Delaney, Lisa Kealey of Bord na Mona and the Midlands Cladding fabrication team. Big thank you to all involved. Photos by Guy Robbins.

Big thank you to all who supported, fabricated and installed my wsculpture - Regeneration - at Sculpture in the Parklands in the Lough Boora Discovery Park.
Regeneration - will become the latest addition to the park’s celebrated sculpture trail, reinforcing its unique blend of art, nature, and heritage.
Drawing inspiration from the form of a seed, Regeneration will stand as a powerful symbol of renewal and ecological resilience—reflecting Lough Boora’s own transformation from an industrial bog to a biodiverse sanctuary. Over time, the sculpture will weather naturally, developing a rich patina that echoes the evolving landscape.

“Lough Boora is a place where art, ecology, and memory intersect,” says O’Dwyer. “Regeneration celebrates the resilience of this land and looks to the future with hope.”

The sculpture’s design and placement will ensure harmony with the park’s open vistas and other site-specific artworks, offering visitors a new focal point for reflection and connection with the environment.
