The Heritage Centre houses an exhibition about 1916 Proclamation signatory Sean McDermott or Seán MacDiarmada as he was later known. The exhibition contains an audio-visual facility and interpretive panels, providing visitors with information about him, as well as the history of the locality. The Heritage Centre itself is located in the former courthouse building and has been developed with Peace

III funding administered by Leitrim County Council. The main aims of the centre are to welcome visitors to Kiltyclogher, and provide information about the history of the village with a particular focus on the Seán MacDiarmada legacy. The family cottage where MacDiarmada was born and raised is in Corranmore a few kilometres outside the village. This is maintained in its original condition as a National Monument by the OPW and may be visited by prior arrangement.

Follow me up to Carlow
The song commemorates the Battle of Glenmalure in 1580 during the Second Desmond Rebellion. In this battle, the Gaelic chieftain Fiach MacHugh O'Byrne (often spelled Feach or Fiacha) led Irish forces to a major victory over an English army commanded by Lord Arthur Grey, the Lord Deputy of Ireland.

Margereth and Pat Kirwan from Tullow , County Carlow arrived unexpectedely but exactly at the right time as I had just finished a tour which suited us all.
They loved the cottage and had great praise for Seán .
They were up for fun and adventure. We also spoke about the butterstamp of the Mcdermott family being an image of a wild rose which is the beautiful name upon Leitrim ( The wild Rose County).
They said there is an unusual name for Carlow and they are not sure where it came from. The county is known as
"The Scallion Eaters."

If you know why or someone from Carlow. Please tell us or ask them.We would love to know here.
If you wish to book a tour , please ring 0719854865

PS (for those who may not know a scallion is a spring onion.}

The tourist season is in full swing now at both the Heritage Centre and the Mac Diarmada home with a steady footfall of visitors from home and abroad. Amongst our visitors in recent days were Keith and Mike both hailing from picturesque parts of England. Mike from Penzance in Cornwall and Keith from Derbyshire close to the famous Peak District.

The gentlemen were on the final day of their Irish holiday which they throughly enjoyed and having managed to dodge most of the showers. As Mike is an archaeologist their itenary was mainly viewing ancient neolitic and megalithic sites including Newgarange and the Cavan Burren both of which they were really impressed with. They were also delighted to experience an authentic nineteenth century Irish homestead and learn the life story of Sean Mac Diarmada the revolutonary leader who was born and reared within its walls.

Keith and Mike, thank you for your vist, it was lovely to meet you both and to hear how much you enjoyed your trip to Ireland.

John Mc Dermott who is circumnavigating Ireland took time leave the Wild Atlantic Way to drop into the birthplace of his namesake.
He new a lot about Seán Mac Diarmada and relayed cottage stories of his own from his childhood days in Ballybrit, County Galway, near the race course. He loved the story of Seán and his leadership during the 1916 Rising.
John also lived in Stockton, Manchester with many more Irish families.
Did you know 33% of Mancurians see themselves as Irish and you are all welcome to the cottage.

Belfast Calling ( The mouth of the Sandbank) Plenty of visitors bringing the good weather with them.
Chris Hilen photographer and Declan Hill tourguide arrived on a Sunny day to the home of 1916 hero Seán Mac Diarmada .
It's great to see the visitors growing. We had great craic and of course tea and biscuits in the Heritage centre where tour guide Declan Hill donated us his book " Belfast Twelve City Walks" Looks fascinating .Each walk is a tour and at the end of each walk is a pub, he smiled saying for Beer , tea ,coffee refreshments or water.
He's a very smart and humourus man with lots of stories.Well worth booking him or buying his fascinating book. It's a great way to explore Belfast as the book takes you through all the historic and sites of interest. Its easy to read and follow the detailed walks mapped so carefully for your pleasure so if you plan to visit Belfast this is an excellent guide book.

Over the years we have got many return visits from tourists to both the Heritage Centre and the Mac Diarmada Homestead and we are always delighted to welcome people back. Pictured here is Stevie Northern from Beleek who I first had on tour some time back and paid a return visit today. Stevie has a great love for Irish History so once again we had a wonderful chat about Leitrims revolutonary leader Seàn Mac Diarmada and Irish history in general. We discussed everything from the early Irish Saints, to the battle of the Boyne right up to the present day political climate in Ireland. Stevie, once again, thank you for your visit it was great to catch up and whenever you have visitors make sure and give us a shout.

Sive Bresnihan Dromahair brought her two nephews . Ted on the left and Mark in the middle on a trip to Kiltyclogher to visit the home of 1916 hero Seán Mac Diatmada.
We had a great time watching our 10 minute 1916 Lego movie in the Heritage Centre before going to Seáns home.
Sive was on a real mission to bring her nephews to the cottage and naxigated her way around the current Road works on the R283 Manorhamilton road which can divert you into roads less travelled but the intrepid trio got here.
Well done Sive and your nephews are little hero's in their own making .It was lovely to have them at the cottage. Thanks so much and say "Hi" to Paddy ,Sives brother who is another of our frequent visitors to Kiltyclogher.

Did you know the Irish Translation: Droim Dhá Thiar (sometimes Droim Dhá Eithear), translates to "Ridge of (the) two demons".
Is this true. We might have to ask the wonderful Dromair Historical Soceity to throw some light on the matter.
Enjoy the weekend.Plenty of people on the go.

Had a lovely visit today from Mickey O Rourke.and Shannon from Gubaveeny in our neighbouring county of Cavan. As well as discussing the remarkable life of Seàn Mac Diarmada we had a great chat about school days in St Clares Comprehensive, Manorhamilton and in particular the journey to school on the Blacklion/Glenfarne bus.

Mickey also had great memories of attending the Sean Mac Diarmada commemorations over the years. Shannon and Mickey, thank you for your visit. It was lovely to meet you both and make sure to call back again for a tour of the cottage.

London Calling
Fabulous tour
Mac an tSaoir
Son of the Freeman

Seamus, Máire and Niamh had a lot to tell about their Irish roots in CarrickAllen and very proud of their Drumshanbo roots with Joe Nangles name popping out at you.The same Joe Nangle of the famous Sheemore Ambush during the war of Independence.
Very proud of Seán and with a great Irish sense of humour .Seamus then told me about the London Irish volunteers Brigade and how they trained ironically in what was known as the German Gym Kingscross. Tá Gaeilge aige agus bhimid cúplá focal idir mé féin agus é féin.
Another great sage arrived at the cottage.Pilib Quigley born in Buncranna with his truly beautiful Dog Bella. He is coming back agus bhí cúpla focal as Gaeilge aige.
He will be arriving back so more words about this legend on a later post.
Good luck Niamh in your flat hunting . I have a funny feeling I will meet you all again .

A Kiltyclogher Welcome
from Pat Fox and sister Cecilia welcomed their couisin Maura Sullivan McLoughlin who they hadnt seen in 40 years on a whistlestop 2 day tour of North Leitrims hidden gems.
I was very lucky to meet them as they whizzed through our beautiful townlands. Travelling with the excited Maura to visit her ancestors graveside in the Old Rossinver Cemetary, ploughing on to St.Aidans church at Lough Melvin, BenBulben, Knocknarea Queen Maeves grave , Strandhill, Drumcliffe Yeats Grave, Eagles Rock, Glenade Valley, Manorhamilton,Glencar waterfall, Kiltyclogher Heritage Centre, Seán Mac Diarmada's Cottage, The Organic centre, Ballroom of Romance, Garrison and Fowleys Falls to name as much as I can remember.
An unbelievable adventure for Maura on her return to her cousins after such a long time.
It seemed to be a fantastic journey for Maura but also an emotional visit.
Well done cousins.
