An interpretative centre and small museum housing an exhibition of 1916 Hero
Seán Mac Diarmada Admission is free. Call 071 984 54376 and arrange your visit.

The Heritage Centre houses an exhibition about 1916 Proclamation signatory Sean McDermott or Seán MacDiarmada as he was later known. The exhibition contains an audio-visual facility and interpretive panels, providing visitors with information about him, as well as the history of the locality. The Heritage Centre itself is located in the former courthouse building and has been developed with Peace III funding administered by Leitrim County Council. The main aims of the centre are to welcome visitors to Kiltyclogher, and provide information about the history of the village with a particular focus on the Seán MacDiarmada legacy. The family cottage where MacDiarmada was born and raised is in Corranmore a few kilometres outside the village. This is maintained in its original condition as a National Monument by the OPW and may be visited by prior arrangement.

Night Visiting below a canopy of Stars.
St. Mogues Bawn Boy TY students County Cavan were joined by Spanish students for a night time vigil to Seán Mac Diarmada's Cottage. We must say its a credit to their teachers Martha and Janet for booking the tour and staying in our Holiday Centre.
It was something totally different . Indeed it was amazing to hear the questions about the house and how knowledgeable the students were on 1916 hero Seán Mac Diarmada as well as their fantastic walk on the Stairway to Heaven(Over twenty kilometers long plus other walks prior to this 10k there and back walk to our beloved and treasured historic cottage.
It was a very exciting adventure for us and for the TY students on their Gaisce journey. We might just take them up on that invite to Seville.

The return of Melanie Ward, local studies librarian with Leitrim County Library.
Melanie has visited the cottage before and met Patricia so it was lovely to meet her for myself today. Melanie has helped in our research and has added very rare and important books on Seán Mac Diarmada to our library especially as some of them are out of print.(The Mind of the Revolution-Gerard MacAtasney)
She had arrived on a beautiful afternoon with Fergal McGovern(Centre) from Swad or officially Swanlinbar County Cavan. He was very moved and very impressed with the Heritage Centre and Seán Mac Diarmada's Cottage . He remarked on how important it was that the building be maintained and the work we do in Kiltyclogher be properly supported.
Karl Moore Save Dough Mountain(on the right) had dropped up to help us trace the path of Seán Mac Diarmada's near cuts and long cuts as he walked to his famous school in Corracloona, Kiltyclogher. He had travelled this route as a young boy till he finally left as an adult so it would be nice to trace his path as best we can.
Thank you to you all. The support is really welcome.

It's always great to welcome relations of Sèan Mac Diarmada to his family home. Pictured here is Christina (Tina) Mc Goldrick, née Mc Morrow who visited here today accompanied by her husband George. Tina is closely related to Seàn Mac Diarmada on his mother's side, Mary Mac Dermot being a Mc Morrow prior to her marriage to Donald Mc Dermot.

Although happily residing in Drumahair for many years Tina has never forgot her Kiltyclogher roots and regularly pays visits to the homeground.

Tina and George are themselves involved in the tourist sector having started the very successful Rose Of Innisfree Boat trips on Lough Gill, now being managed by their son. The trips are highly recommended, with many of the tourists to the
cottage and the Heritage Centre mentioning how much they enjoyed the experience. So check it out on line, roseofinnisfree.com or phone 087 2598869.

Had a really great tour yesterday with the Mac Dermott cousins. Pictured from left , Jullie, Annie, Anne and myself, Patricia Mc Caffrey, tour guide. The ladies are enjoying a visit to the homeground of their ancestors, the Mac Dermotts of Glenkeel. Of course they also wished to pay a visit to the Brthplace of their namesake and likely relation Seàn Mac Diarmada. We were joined by Penny, from New Zealand and had a great discussion on Irish history, in particular the 1916 rising.We spoke about the significance of Sèan Mac Diarmada's pivotal role in the orcanstration of the rising and his monumental contribution to the re- organisation of the IRB.

Also, I was really interested to hear the incredible lifestory of the ladies remarkable granaunt Sorcha Mac Dermott. Sorcha, a member of the London branch of Cuman na mbhan was later imprisoned during the civil war as an anti treaty activist. Interestingly, the majority of Cuman na mbhan members took the anti treaty position.

Sorcha's revolutionary experience makes for fascinating read, so we will dedicate a separate post to her life story.

A special thank you to Jullie for booking the tour and providing us with a photograph and background information of Sorcha. Also to Penney for acting as photographer and sharing her funny anecdotes and stories of her tour around Europe this summer.

🏔️ A wonderful adventure in nature! 🌿

Yesterday we had an incredible opportunity to explore Arroo and experience the beauty of our local landscape.

It was a truly memorable adventure — breathtaking views, beautiful nature and lots of wonderful moments along the way. 🌄✨

We were also delighted to meet Martin, who guided us on this fantastic excursion and shared his knowledge and love for the area with us. Thank you, Martin, for such an enjoyable and unforgettable experience! 💚

I was delighted to have a tour recently with Glasnevin tour guide Grainne Nolan, especially since I am already a follower on the Glasnevin Cemetery Facebook showing her excellent tours. Grainne's tours are interesting, informative and entertaining. In essence, she brings the dead to life. Also she sings a beautiful rendition of the popular ballad 'Grace', a song composed in commeration of wedding of Grace Gifford to Joseph Plunket in Kilmainham Gaol just hours before his ex*****on for his part in the 1916 rising.

Following the tour discussion on Seàn Mac Diarmada I really appreciated Grainne reciprocating with enthralling tales from her Glassnevin tours.

Grainne was accompanied by Louis Rice who also had some really interesting stories from his own family history. His great grandfather James Blaney Rice from County Monaghan was a senior figure in the IRB, a veteran of the Fenian Rising of 1867 and a close friend of O Donovan Rossa.
Interestingly, the Rice family have a photograph of O Donovan Rossa in their possession.

Subsequently Louis's grandfather Eamonn Ross Rice was elected as a Fianna Fail TD in 1932 general election, serving until his death in 1937.. Thereafter his wife Bridget Mary Rice successfully contested the 1948 general election and was re elected in all successive general elections until her retirement from politics in 1954.

Grainne and Louis also paid a visit to the Heritage Centre, where along with fellow tour guide Ciaran Rock we had more history discussions and another great chat.
