We're absolutely devastated to learn of the recent and sudden death of Dermot Mulligan, Curator of Carlow County Museum. Dermot was a proud Carlow man with strong Monaghan roots through his Mulligan relations here in the county.

He was a loved and deeply respected member of the regional museum network. Everyone who worked with him enjoyed his warm and welcoming personality. We all benefitted from his professional passion and the pride he had in representing his county to the world.

Our thoughts are with his wife, his family and his colleagues at Carlow County Museum and Carlow County Council.

He was a good friend and a wonderful human being. We'll not see his like again.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

May he rest in peace.

🎨✨ Bealtaine at the Museum ✨🎨

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in our 4-week mosaic making class facilitated by Elaine from Annan's Arch 🧩💛

Connections were made, friendships were formed, and creativity flourished 🤝🌸

The works of art created by the participants were truly beautiful 🖼️✨

Thank you all for making it such a special experience 💕

🐝 Beehive quernstone 🍞

The name comes from its resemblance to the old straw beehives known as skeps

Quernstones were used to mill grain in order to make bread 🍞

Traditional straw beehives were later replaced by the wooden beehives that we are familiar with today.

Did you know? 🤔 It is the domesticated honeybee that lives in a hive, while most other bee species make their homes in the wild 🌼🌿

🌍🐝 National Bee Day took place this week — be kind to all our bees 💛

🧶✨ Celebrate World Knit & Crochet in Public Day with Us! ✨

⏰Saturday 13 June, 10:30am - 12:30pm

Monaghan County Museum and Monaghan Town Library warmly invite you to join us in celebrating creativity, community, and craft.

Help us grow our Community Story Shawl by knitting or crocheting a small charm. Each stitch represents a memory, a moment, or a story — and together, we’ll weave something truly special.

💛 Whether you’re an experienced crafter or just starting out, everyone is welcome to take part.

🪡 Bring your needles, hooks, and creativity — and be part of a shared piece of community history.

Let’s come together, connect, and celebrate the art of making… one stitch at a time.

🎻✨ This past weekend was the time to celebrate all things fiddle with World Fiddle Day 🎶🌍

This image from the Donal McEnroe collection shows James McElwain in his workshop in Smithboro 🪵🛠️

He had been interested in fiddle making from a young age, but it was in his retirement that he took up the craft full time 🎻❤️

Self-taught and deeply talented, he produced fiddles, harps and clock cases with remarkable intricate detail.
