Today marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Garda Michael Clerkin, who was murdered by a booby-trap bomb on the Laois-Offaly border on October 16th 1976. He was remembered at a memorial event earlier today.

In 2017, Garda Clerkin was posthumously awarded the Gold Scott Medal, the highest award for bravery in An Garda Síochána.

His brother, Pádraig, known to his friends as ‘Chucks’, worked at Monaghan County Museum until his death in 2006.

Today, we remember them both.
