I am presently working on a painting of Doo Lough in Mayo, just north of Killary Harbour. The lake is situated in the valley between Glencullin, Mweelrea, and the Sheefry Hills. At the end of the valley stand Ben Creggan and Ben Gorm (the Blue Mountain).

The name Doo Lough is the anglicised version of the Gaelic Dubh Loch, meaning 'the Black Lake'. I am drawn to this valley and this lake for many reasons. In the past, I have climbed all the mountains that surround it. When there, I remember the poor people who died there in what became known as 'the Doolough Tragedy'. I have found, while working on the painting, I keep thinking of those poor souls, and I wanted the painting to reflect this.

I am including a link, which will be of interest to those who wish to know more:

Drawn from the heart of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, this piece captures a quiet moment deep in the woods of Upper Glenbarrow, where the forest floor is dotted with pine cones and softened by moss. It's a small, familiar scene but full of texture, stillness, and the feeling of being completely surrounded by nature. ⛰🌲

A different technique was used to create this piece, "Restful Waters". As the viewer’s eye moves from the background toward the foreground, the light follows that path, gradually coming forward and reflecting on the calm, still water below.
