🎶 Today is National Album Day, a celebration of the musical legends and timeless recordings that have shaped our love of music.

It’s the perfect occasion to shine a spotlight on the His Master’s Voice (HMV) wind-up gramophone, a beautiful and treasured piece dating from the 1920s or 1930s, housed in the library of Strokestown Park House.

The His Master's Voice (HMV) brand, famous for its iconic image of Nipper the dog listening to a phonograph, was one of the renowned manufacturers of these machines, producing beautifully crafted wooded cabinets and precision-engineered soundboxes that brought the music to life.

This wonderful gramophone remains in excellent condition and can be viewed on a guided house tour at Strokestown Park House — a lovely reminder of how we listened to and enjoyed music in years gone by.

VOICES ALONG THE FAMINE WAY | VOLUME 5 | THE EVICTION CROWBAR

In Volume 5, Alan McDermott, Maintenance Manager at the National Famine Museum in Strokestown, introduces us to a striking artefact: the eviction crowbar.

Used by landlords and the Crowbar Brigade during evictions, this tool was used to dismantle homes, removing masonry, wood and other materials before demolishing the gable end. The aim was to ensure that families could not simply return to their homes after being evicted.

According to local folklore, the crowbar was taken by a man named Dockery or Doherty during a local eviction in later years. It was subsequently recovered from a bog and donated to the National Famine Museum.

This artefact offers a stark reminder that eviction meant more than losing a roof over your head. Homes were deliberately destroyed, leaving families with little chance of returning to the lives they had known.

They have since made there way back to the Gift Shop, waiting to find their new homes. 🏡💛
