Waterford Gallery Of Art

Waterford Gallery Of Art Home to Waterford's Collection of Art - one of the oldest civic collections of art in Ireland. Admission Free.

One of the hidden gems of the Irish art world, offering a fascinating view of Irish painting in the first half of the twentieth century. The Collections of the Waterford Gallery of Art form an integral part of the city’s cultural heritage and identity. Formerly known as The Waterford Municipal Art Collection, the collection is acknowledged as one of the oldest and best municipal collections of art

in Ireland. Originally founded as the Waterford Art Museum in 1939, the collection has grown considerably since and it now comprises over 500 works of art. These include paintings, prints, and sculptures - much of which provide a valuable insight into the development of twentieth-century Irish Art. Significant highlights of the collection include works by Paul Henry, Jack B. Yeats, Mainie Jellett, Louis Le Brocquy, Letitia Hamilton, Dermod O’Brien, Evie Hone, Mary Swanzy, Charles Lamb, Hilda Roberts, Seán Keating, Eileen Murray, and George Russell (aka. AE), as well as contemporary acquisitions of work by Michael (Ben) Hennessy, Breda Lynch, Hughie O’Donoghue, Donald Teskey, and Kathleen Delaney. Opening Hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 10am – 5.00pm

The Waxed Lemon - in association with Waterford City and County Council and Wayne Power Poetry - is proud to present POETRY DAY WATERFORD 2026 on Thursday May 28.

The theme of Poetry Day this year is "Home" and we're bringing it all back home with a wealth of local talent.

We begin at 1pm in the Waterford Gallery Of Art with "The Sound of Poetry", where local poets and musicians will perform famous poems and the songs they inspired. Poetry Day continues with a writing workshop with Lani O'Hanlon in the Waterford Gallery of Art, a reading by Mary Howlett at the Bealtaine event in Carrickpherish Library, an open mic in Tully's bar, and culminates with our two flagship events: "Home: A Poetry Reading" in GOMA Gallery of Modern Art Waterford featuring three of Waterford's finest poets - Lani O'Hanlon, Mark Roper, and Clíodhna Bhreathnach, and "Home at Christchurch", an evening of poetry and music in Christchurch Cathedral, curated and presented by Wayne Power.

Something for everyone this Poetry Day and admission to all events is FREE thanks to the support and funding of the Arts Office of Waterford City and County Council
