From Venice to Times Square ๐Ÿš€

Last days to experience ยดFarewellโ€™ by Yael Bartana - currently presented across Times Square as part of Times Square Artsโ€™ Midnight Moment.

Originally featured at the German Pavilion during the 60th Venice Art Biennale, ยดFarewellโ€™ is a striking video installation and part of her ongoing ยดLight to the Nationsโ€™ project. The work depicts the ceremonial departure of a fictional generation ship escaping an Earth exhausted by human failure.

Presented nightly across more than 100 synchronized screens in Times Square, ยดFarewellโ€™ transforms one of the worldโ€™s most hyper-visible public spaces into a monumental cinematic environment suspended between utopia and catastrophe.

๐Ÿ’กArtist Spotlight: Tal R

This month marks the opening of two major solo exhibitions by Tal R across Scandinavia, each unfolding a different dimension of the artistโ€™s rich and deeply imaginative visual world.

Opening this week at the Millesgรฅrden Museum in Stockholm, โ€˜The Elephant in the Roomโ€™ transforms the historic home and studio of Carl Milles through painting, sculpture, and uncanny interventions - including a monumental pink elephant placed among Millesโ€™ classical plaster casts.

As Shavuot approaches, weโ€™re thinking about the ways ritual, memory, and material culture continue to resonate within contemporary art.

Two of our gallery artists, Naama Arad and Lihi Turjeman, are currently presenting in โ€œStanding Before: Israeli Art Behind the Parochetโ€ at the Mishkan Museum of Art, Ein Harod.

Their works engage with objects, symbols, and spaces drawn from Jewish tradition - not as fixed heritage, but as living sources for reflection, transformation, and reinterpretation.

For Ronit Porat, portraiture is never fixed. Drawing from archival and historical imagery, her works blur the line between presence and disappearance, intimacy and distance.
Fragmented figures become charged spaces, where the artist questions the act of observation itself - how we look at others and construct meaning through images.

Rather than capturing identity, Porat reveals how fragile, shifting, and constructed it can be.

Public Art ๐Ÿš‡๐Ÿ’ก Karl Haendel

Check out Karl Haendelโ€™s new permanent public art commission, Hands and Things, now installed at the Wilshire/Fairfax Metro Station (D Line) in Los Angeles.

Drawing on collections from nearby museums and cultural institutions, Haendel brings historical and everyday objects into direct contact with the present. Held in the hands of local residents, these artifacts create encounters between past and present, institution and lived experience.

Artist Spotlight ๐Ÿ’ก Marion Baruch

Marion Baruch (b. 1929, Timiศ™oara) has developed a singular practice across borders and disciplines, with textile at its core. A pioneer of participatory and fiber-based practices, she continually reinvents her relationship to fabric - studying, collecting, recomposing, and articulating it into space.

Working with discarded remnants from the fashion industry, Baruch creates suspended compositions shaped by gesture and gravity, revealing the poetic potential of what remains.

Throwing it back to ยซย Lea Nikel / Works on Paperย ยป, an exhibition presented at Sommer Contemporary Art nearly 20 years ago (Oct 20 โ€“ Nov 24, 2006).

The exhibition brought together a selection of intimate works on paper - pastels, watercolors, and gouache - revealing a more immediate and experimental dimension of Nikelโ€™s practice.

Lea Nikel remains one of the most prominent figures of abstract painting in Israel, known for her vibrant compositions and expressive use of color, which placed her at the forefront of modern and lyrical abstraction.

Looking back, this exhibition highlighted the raw energy and freedom that defined her work, qualities that continue to resonate today.

โœจ Exhibition recommendation:
If youโ€™re in Jerusalem, donโ€™t miss ยซย Lea Nikel: Path to Edenย ยป, now on view at the Israel Museum. A rare opportunity to rediscover Nikelโ€™s singular world and enduring influence.

Artist Spotlight ๐Ÿ’ก Shai Azoulay

Shai Azoulay (b. 1971, Kiryat Shmona) lives and works in Jerusalem and is widely recognized for his distinctive visual language and strong narrative sensibility. Moving fluidly between figuration and abstraction, his paintings are populated by expressive figures that balance humor, tenderness, spirituality, and a subtle irony of the human condition.
Rich in color and gesture, Azoulayโ€™s work draws on both personal and collective memory, often rooted in his early years between Kiryat Shmona and Arad.

A graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (BFA, MFA), he has exhibited widely in Israel and internationally, and his works are held in major collections worldwide. Alongside his artistic practice, Azoulay has been teaching in Bezalelโ€™s Haredi branch since 2010. His work has received numerous awards, and Sommer Contemporary Art is proud to be a longtime collaborator and representative.

Fresh from celebrating his birthday, weโ€™re excited to share his newest exhibition:
