A white screen, a reflection on the floor, and an image of destruction that reveals itself only on a second look - this week at NonFinito, we turn to Naama Roth.
For several years now, most TV channels have been caught in a single, unending broadcast. In contrast to the constant noise on the television screen at home, the screen in Roth’s work emits a bright white light, devoid of any image, like a promise yet to be fulfilled. On closer inspection, through its reflection on the floor, another image emerges - fire, smoke, destruction - peering at us through layers of glass and artificial light.
This elusive space between the visible and the hidden continues throughout the installation. The pristine white light is blocked by bars in the shape of a tree and flowers - an apparatus of policing and confinement disguised as innocent domestic decoration. Rust and concrete, materials drawn from the real public sphere, bring together construction and control with separation and destruction.
Two female heads cast in concrete stand as silent sentinels - somewhere between monument, testimony, and a remnant left in the aftermath of disaster.
Roth also enters into dialogue with the visual language of Ze’ev Raban, one of the founding fathers of the Bezalel style and of Hebrew design. Raban’s works helped shape an idyllic visual fantasy of the Land of Israel, where ornament, biblical sources, nature, localism, spirituality, and nationhood converged. In Roth’s work, that image returns as a distant echo - a remnant of a utopian dream transformed into a dystopian reality.
As an installation artist, Roth dismantles cultural and architectural archetypes and uses them to construct complex material and emotional spaces that challenge the viewer’s perception.
The exhibition is on view through November 28, 2026.
Gallery hours:
Wednesday-Thursday | 12 pm-7 pm
Friday-Saturday | 10 am-2 pm
