Written by Acharya Ajitprabhasuri in the late fourteenth century 1396 CE (1453 Vikram Samvat), in devnagari script and sanskrit language. The manuscript vividly describes the twelve births of the 16th Tirthankara Shantinath. The Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Institute of Indology received this as one of the 10,000 manuscripts donated by Aagam Prabhakar Muni Shri Punyavijayaji in 1961. This rare illustrated 14th-century Jain manuscript of the Shantinath Charitra is on display for the first time.

This painting offers a glimpse into the love story of Rupmati and Baz Bahadur. Often depicted riding together, their story begins with a chance encounter when the Sultan, out hunting, was captivated by Rupmati’s voice and presence.

Here, the couple rides side by side on horses with henna-dyed legs, set against a quiet landscape. A lotus-filled lake stretches into a soft sky. Their gestures suggest an intimate exchange, as Rupmati gently embraces Baz Bahadur, reinforcing the painting’s tender narrative of companionship.

World Heritage Day
The Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum invites you to step into the museum not just as a visitor, but as a participant in re-imagining heritage. The museum opens up histories through educational programmes and guided interactions that might otherwise remain distant.

Heritage is not only about monuments or objects; it is a living continuum of practices and memories. It connects generations, offering a sense of continuity while also prompting us to reflect. By encouraging dialogue and participation, the museum becomes a shared platform where multiple perspectives can coexist, and where heritage is continually re-examined.

Portraits of Aurangzeb in his old age form a recurring theme in Mughal miniature painting, often reflecting the biographical accounts of his later years, which were marked by both political authority and personal austerity.

This example, likely dating to the early 18th century, is a jharokha portrait where the emperor is shown in a window framed by a rolled curtain above and a textile draped across the balustrade below.

With the pasting of a series of different kinds of decorative mounts around an essentially small-sized portrait, the total assemblage has a modernistic appearance. The fact remains that such elaborate mounting was often resorted to for royal portraits, though qualitatively this kind of mounting is quite different from that of Jahangir and Shahjahan type portraits.

K. G. Subramanyan
The Concept of Tradition and Other Essays

This volume delves into how art reflects the ever-evolving relationship between humanity and nature, exploring industrialization’s impact on cultural practices and memory.

In The Concept of Tradition and Other Essays, K. G. Subramanyan explores questions about art and tradition, such as whether tradition is more than a mere linear progression of artifacts and ideas. He also explores how art reflects on the evolving relationship between nature and humanity and the impact industrialization has had on our aesthetic sensibilities. He interrogates the structures that transmit cultural knowledge across generations while exploring whether tradition can serve as a viable framework for human endeavor in modern society. Subramanyan brings his trademark candour, lucidity, and wisdom to these reflections and responses.

Mughal painting developed in India during the 16th century under the patronage of Akbar, with crucial foundations laid earlier by Humayun. Bringing together artists and ideas from Persian, Central Asian, and European traditions, this style evolved into a refined and richly detailed visual language.

This month, we focus on a quieter yet significant element within these works—foliage. Through a selection of paintings from the N C Mehta Collection, this trail draws attention to the careful rendering of plants, trees, and floral forms within the paintings and the borders that enclose them. Often minute in detail, foliage plays an essential role in shaping the atmosphere, depth, and overall composition of Mughal miniatures, revealing how closely observation of nature informed their aesthetic.

Join us every Wednesday this month as we revisit the familiar collection through a new lens.

About the film 📽️
The film emerges as a poignant homage to Reuben David, the legendary “miracle man” of Ahmedabad. It traces the remarkable journey of a man born into a Jewish family—an aesthete and music lover, once a passionate hunter—whose life underwent a profound transformation into one of deep compassion for the animal world.

Endowed with an instinctive understanding of wildlife, Reuben David went on to envision and create the iconic Kamala Nehru Zoological Park and the vibrant ecological precinct around Kankaria Lake—enduring landmarks woven into the city’s cultural fabric. Revered as Gujarat’s first wildlife conservationist, his contributions earned national recognition from Indira Gandhi and the honour of the Padma Shri.

The film by Bijoy Anand Shivram stands as a quiet yet powerful tribute to a life of vision, resilience, and lasting legacy.

As the palm leaf ages and becomes brittle they are susceptible to breakage. The losses in palm leaves can be mended with an archival tissue paper of suitable thickness depending on the strength of the leaf. This gives them structural stability and prevents any further loss. These steps also take into consideration the aesthetic appeal of the object.
