Millions of women endured unimaginable loss during Partition — many of whom lost their families, their homes, their sense of safety. Yet it was women who rose from these very ashes to lead the way in rebuilding lives and communities.

A pocket knife, small yet powerful, carries with it a story of courage and survival.

Generously donated by Kamlesh Rani, this knife journeyed with her during the Partition of 1947, from Sialkot (now in Pakistan) to Jammu. It was more than an object—it was a shield, meant for protection in uncertain times.

Today, it stands in our archive as a reminder of the resilience, strength, and sacrifices of millions who lived through the Partition.

Kamlesh Rani, too, lived through those harrowing times. Despite the trauma of loss, women like her became symbols of survival and nation-building. Their strength reminds us that even in the darkest chapters of history, women not only endured but also shaped the future.

15 August 1947 - the Tricolour soars above the Red Fort for the first time.
A moment of triumph and a turning point in history - freedom hard-won, yet shadowed by the pain of Partition. At the Partition Museum, we remember both the joy of independence and the human stories of resilience that followed.

On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, we reflect on one of the most turbulent chapters of our history - when millions were displaced, families torn apart, and entire communities reshaped in 1947.
This year, the Partition Museum marked the day with a contemplative walkthrough of the galleries, tracing the journeys and voices preserved within. We also collaborated with the Vivekananda International Foundation on their commemorative programme featuring a film on Partition Museum and survivor testimonies from the Museum’s oral history archive followed by an open exchange of memories and reflections.
Each act of remembrance strengthens the thread that ties these stories to our present ensuring they are not lost to time.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lord Meghnad Desai, Baron Desai of St Clement Danes, a distinguished economist, author, and long-serving member of the House of Lords. He passed away on 29 July 2025, at the age of 85.
Lord Desai was internationally recognized for his contributions to economic thought and public life. Over a remarkable academic career spanning more than five decades, he taught at the London School of Economics, where he founded the Centre for the Study of Global Governance. He authored over 25 books and more than 200 scholarly articles that influenced discourse across disciplines. In 1991, he was elevated to the peerage for life and served in the House of Lords with characteristic independence, intellectual clarity, and moral courage.
He was conferred the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2008, and remained a rare figure whose influence spanned continents, ideologies, and generations.
Closely involved with the Partition Museum from its inception, he infused its work with thoughtfulness and integrity. His clear engagement, probing questions, and unwavering support shaped a vision dedicated to preserving the human truths of 1947, providing crucial weight and direction to the institution at critical junctures. This institution bears his imprint, as enduring as the one he left on scholarship and public life.
We honour his memory and extend our condolences to Lady Kishwar Desai and all who grieve his passing.

"We recorded their voices knowing time was short - many were already in the evening of their lives."
At the Ministry of Culture, Museum Division's Roundtable on Latest Advancements in the Museum Sector, Lady Kishwar Desai, Founder of the Partition Museum, spoke on how technology has helped capture and preserve oral histories of Partition survivors.
These testimonies, recorded on film and carefully archived, now speak to thousands through video installations across our galleries. Visitors encounter living memory through image and voice, woven into the fabric of the museum experience.
Lady Desai highlighted how recording survivors’ stories was a race against time, and how technology made it possible to preserve their words for generations to come.
