Bought a plain white plate about a month back with the idea of transforming it into a k*m k*m manjal design vethalai paakku thattu. Also had the idea of buying similar plates to make the same stuff in bulk for gifting this navarathri season. Well the bulk thing looks like a far cry, but this one is ready :)

And the love with coconut shell continues... The blue colour miniscule pillaiyar seen here is very special. Being the staunch believer that I am, this was my first purchase after receiving my first salary years ago...

Shaken up from my deep slumber, made this quick Ganpati pattern. Inspiration drawn from a sticker behind some parked school van. Yeah, I've gone that crazy ;)

It helps that some of the old ones didn't get posted on time...That way, it does wonders to keep the page alive :)

Although times have changed and sticker kolams kind of replaced arisi maavu kolams in few households for convenience purposes, some traditional practices have their own charm. This kundan rangoli can be used as a border or as a kolam by itself. As shown in the 3rd pic same can be used as thoranam too.

Now that the disclaimer about photographic skills of yours truly is in place, I can continue posting. This looks ridiculously simple, but the small stones are quite a strain to the eye :(. Nevertheless, enjoyed making this 4 piece Fish pattern rangoli :)

Got to make 19 more sets of about the same size for an aunt in the neighbourhood for a small get together at her place. She seems to have invited only 15 ladies but wants to make sure she isn't caught in an embarassing situation running short of gifts for tamboolam. Very thoughtful. Charging her Rs.50 per set. When arranged this measures about 1ft * 1ft

There is this Sloka book with me which I used to piously read as a child. This Kumbham / kuthuvilakku pattern idea was borrowed from this sloka book. I find it hard to part with some old books however worn out or out of use they may be. It's like re visiting your best part of life every now and then.

I have realised that I need to do a bit more than sitting idle to keep the page alive, hence this post. First off, I do ask you dear visitor, to be nice and bear with me until I work on my photographic skills. This 5-piece 'agal rangoli' or 'lamp rangoli' was done close to Karthigai deepam in 2015. And it got sold in a stall that was put up in Jan '16.

It all started off a month before Navarathri last year. The probable no. of ladies, girls and boys that would be invited was listed. Always easy to choose a gift which would go with the tamboolam for girls. Also, for boys. As for ladies, the older ones would invariably be given blouse bit. (ravikkai thuni - mangalagaram, though it may go around the family circle and land back in your own house). But although options are aplenty for the younger womenfolk, it is almost impossible to settle down for something which is not made of plastic. It is my unfaltering quest to try and avoid plastic that led me to this idea of 'making' something for gifting. The transparency sheets from yesteryears carefully tucked away somewhere came to my mind. The memory of seeing kundan rangolis also came along. and then few not so big rangolis were made. Then came the news that due to an aged relative's demise Golu shouldn't be celebrated twith he usual fervour. So the invitees list was toned down. And except for 2-3 which were given to folks who did visit about that time, it looked like the other rangolis would gather dust in the shelf for a while. The thought pained me. But ofcourse my passionately created small-sized rangolis did find an audience in the form of cousins who'd visit on their anniversary without announcement, or aunts who'd visit us to say bye before traveling to phoren settled sons.. But not everyone attaches the value that you'd expect for your hand made stuff. It doesn't go down well with you, when a banana, hand kerchief and an umbrella is pushed along with your rangoli in the same bag. It hurts. So i decided to 'routea maaaaathu'

It is customary for me, to visit the nearby fancy store whenever I visit the Paed's clinic. On an impulse I asked the shopkeeper if he'd buy these from me. What I anticipated was a sarcastic smile along with a vehement head shake. But the guy took these and even paid me. I am woman of conscience ( 'twinkle' ) so checked on the guy to see if he managed to sell them after about 10 days. I was thrilled to bits when he said all were sold as it was festive season and asked me to make more... But bigger. So a second set was given to him. Then the incessant rainfall, consequent floods and having to be stuck indoors saw me making more. The hobby just stuck. It gave me such joy akin to polishing off a nicely cooked and presented feast
