Ashvita’s and INTACH invite you to an evening exploring the deep relationship between royal patronage and the evolution of South Indian classical music.

Presented by Dr. Meenakshi Sumathi Krishnan, the talk traces how Maharajas, princely courts, and cultural institutions shaped the lives of musicians and composers across the 18th and 19th centuries.

Join us on Thursday, 14th May 2026 at 6:30 PM at Ashvita’s, Mylapore, Chennai.

For S. K. Rajavelu, line was never just a tool. It was a way of thinking. Each drawing reflects a quiet discipline shaped over decades, where form is built through clarity rather than excess.

His figures may appear simple, but they hold balance, structure, and intent. The Body, As Is brings together this sustained engagement with the human form.

On view at Ashvita’s, closing on 22nd May.

April at Ashvita’s moved through many textures of line, voice and memory.

The Body, As Is. by S. K. Rajavelu invited a slower gaze, where each drawing unfolded with quiet clarity. SEEN | Between the Lines filled the space with poetry, stories and moments of shared vulnerability. And with Dr. Madhusudhanan Kalaichelvan, the enduring voices of the Odhuvars echoed through time and tradition.

Across it all, the gallery became a place to gather, reflect and connect. A month that stayed with us in lines, in words and in resonance.

A broken line can still hold a complete body.

In S. K. Rajavelu’s practice, breaks in the contour are not absences but deliberate openings - spaces where the eye continues the form. Shaped by a discipline of drawing at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, he trusted restraint over resolution.

Nothing is isolated, nothing removed—the body remains whole, even when the line fragments. These works ask us not just to look, but to participate in seeing.

SEEN returned to open its floor once again at Ashvita’s for an evening of poetry and expression. Voices gathered in quiet courage, sharing fragments, stories, and words still unfolding.

With SEEN, we continue to shape a growing community - one that comes together through art, reflection and shared experience. An evolving series of evenings like this, created to hold space for emerging voices and meaningful connection.

Between the Lines opens its floor. Open Mic at Ashvita’s.

A spoken word evening for poetry, fragments and voices in between. Bring what you’ve written, what you’re still shaping or what you’ve never said out loud.

This is a space for both speaking and listening, for memory, longing and response.

Step in and let your words land.

For conservator Kalpak Kulkarni (), S. K. Rajavelu’s lines are more than studies of the figure, they are pathways into a way of seeing.

In tracing Rajavelu’s practice, he found himself drawn to the sculptural rhythms of Tamil Nadu’s temples. This reflection moves between drawing and stone, showing how one artist’s discipline can reshape another’s journey.

A quiet conversation on influence, attention and the enduring life of form.

Here are the participating artists for this Friday’s spoken word evening.

Featuring Vidya Raju () , Aaliyah () , Antony Rajan () and Balachandar (), each bringing their own voice to The Body, As Is.

Through memory, longing and what remains unspoken, their words extend the lines beyond the page. Be there to listen, to feel, and to read what lives between the lines.
