ere divided into many kingdoms often at war with each other. Warfare in ancient India took on a wide variety of exotic forms, but all of with a uniquely Indian flavor. As the military of ancient India developed so did its iconic features, including elephants, bows and massive infantry armies. Each region of the subcontinent like deserts, mountains, jungles and riverines added its own unique elements to ancient Indian warfare. From the ancient vedic period to the 19th century, a succession of dynasties and rulers governed the laws of this land and were regularly challenged by other Indian rulers and foreign invaders who also struggled for land and power through warring. And then the British colonised India during the 19th century leading to reorganisation of Armies and Navy.The British Indian Army fought in both World Wars. The Indian Armed Forces succeeded the military of British India following India's independence in 1947. The Indian armed forces fought in all three wars against Pakistan and a war with the People's Republic of China. India also fought in the Kargil War with Pakistan in 1999, the highest altitude mountain warfare in history.
