“Confronting ‘Digital’ Sacre “
Hosted by NewArtX with invites artist Gigi Sacrai and Sibdas Sengupta to respond to how digital moves beyond the familiar logic of “extension” and how they confront “digital” as an autonomous apparatus with its own politics, materiality, and aesthetic demands within the scope of their own practise. The conversation also focuses on institutional responses. Saryu Pareek Gupta, addresses how to approach digital not through defensive critique of technological change, but through substantive engagement with its implications.

The conversation runs in conjunction with the exhibition, “Omens. Organisms. Objects. Order”, curated by

Born and raised in Mumbai, Vanita Gupta, “Acts of Escape and Return”, her digital work, orchestrates a silent drama. It begins with a real-time photograph, capturing a serene moment in her studio with a painting-in-progress. As the camera holds its gaze, the black abstract form on the canvas defies its two-dimensional confines.

The work is a powerful reflection of Gupta’s fascination with the dialogue between the material and the immaterial. It is an act of reassembly, a painting that travels through time and returns to us carrying its own myth.

Mumbai based, Teja Gavankar’s work is deeply intertwined with technology, reflecting the modern world’s connection to digital media. For over a decade, her work has consistently focused on flux and movement, leading her to recently create digital art.

Her digital work, ‘Allomothering’ made in collaboration with NewArtX, explores the fleeting nature of external support, drawing a parallel to the human need for “allomothering”: the communal care and protection we offer one another. In times of stress, we are called to be each other’s keepers, to provide the invisible support that gives a sense of safety and belonging.

She exhibited internationally, with her first solo show at The Optica Centre for Contemporary Art in Montreal (2017), and participated in major group exhibitions like Sculpture By The Sea, Sydney, and the Venice Architecture Biennale (2018). Teja has been part of several residencies, including at Khoj International Delhi, What About Art, Mumbai, and Verticale Artist Centre, Laval, Canada. She received the Nasreen Mohamedi Award (2014) and the Space 118 Contemporary Residency Award (2020). Teja teaches Design at the Academy of Architecture and SEA College in Mumbai.

Shalini’s digital art works, “Love Letters”, a two-part installation, is an expression of our intimate relationship with the Falachan river in Himachal Pradesh that flows in front of her house. It feeds the Tirthan, which joins the Beas, then the Sutlej, and eventually merges with the Indus before becoming one with the ocean.

Shalini Dam spent two decades in the advertising world before shifting gears to pursue her passion for ceramics. She went on to earn her Masters in Ceramics from the Cardiff School of Art and Design in Wales, UK. Dam explores the contradictions and dualities that often lie beneath the surface of our world. She juxtaposes recognizable signs, symbols, and forms to raise these questions, using the treatment of the surface and form as a crucial part of her investigation.

Nirali Lal’s practice is deeply connected to her poetry, with her paintings often feeling like a vibrant amalgamation of ideas and colors. Her digital work, “Look Straight / Look No Further” explores the changing nature of human connection in the digital age. The work draws a powerful metaphor from the seemingly simple behavior of ants, who follow the one in front of them without looking further.

Lal holds a Master’s degree in Art Criticism from M.S.U., Baroda (2000), and a Bachelor’s degree in Painting from Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore (1998).
