THEYYAM HEADGEAR
Kerala | Mid 19th Century
From the Collection of Manjusha Museum

This elaborate wooden headgear, crafted in North Kerala, is a striking example of the region’s ritual art associated with the Theyyam tradition—a centuries-old performance practice that blends dance, music, devotion, and mythology.

- The piece is carved with figures of Goddess Lakshmi seated on a lotus, flanked by her divine attendants.
- The fierce facial motif at the centre reflects the divine persona often assumed by the performer during the ritual.
- The surrounding panels narrate mythological scenes and celestial beings, showcasing the artisan’s skill in storytelling through wood carving.
- Such headgear was not merely decorative—it was worn by the performer during ritual enactments where he is believed to embody the deity, offering blessings to the community.

Seen before? This rare artifact reflects not only aesthetic mastery but also the deep spiritual and community connection inherent to the Theyyam performance.

Preserved with care at Manjusha Museum, this headgear reminds us how material culture and living traditions intertwine to preserve collective memory.
