An eight-year-old boy went to a shop in the marketplace and showed the shopkeeper a one-rupee coin and asked, “If God is in your shop, can I buy Him for one rupee?”
The shopkeeper knocked the coin out of the boy’s hand and chased him away. The boy picked up the coin and went from shop to shop asking, “Can I get God for one rupee?” Many shopkeepers drove him away, but the boy did not lose heart.
Finally, he entered a big shop and asked the owner the same question. The shop owner became very angry, dragged him outside, and pushed him away. The boy fell in front of an expensive luxury car that was passing by. The car stopped immediately. Fortunately, he was not hurt.
A wealthy gentleman stepped out of the car and asked the boy what had happened. The boy explained everything and then showed his one-rupee coin and asked, “If you have God with you, can you give Him to me for this one rupee?”
The gentleman smiled and asked, “If I buy God for one rupee and give Him to you, what will you do with Him?”
The boy replied, “My mother is everything to me. She feeds me, sings lullabies, and takes care of me. Now she is very sick and has been admitted to the hospital. The doctors said only God can save her. That is why I am searching to see if I can get God for one rupee.”
Hearing this, the gentleman said, “You want God for one rupee? I will give Him to you.” He wrote a letter, placed it in an envelope, and gave it to the boy. He told him, “Take this to the hospital where your mother is admitted. Ask for a particular doctor and give this letter to him.”
The boy went straight to the hospital and handed the envelope to the doctor mentioned. When the doctor opened it, he was shocked to see that the letter was written personally by the founder of the hospital. Immediately, arrangements were made for intensive and high-quality treatment for the boy’s mother. She was soon saved.
Later, the hospital founder—the same gentleman from the car—came to see the mother, accompanied by senior doctors. The mother was anxious, worrying about how she would pay the hospital expenses.
The gentleman reassured her, “Do not worry. Your son has already paid for all your treatment.”
Hearing this, the mother was shocked and looked at her son, who was sleeping beside her.
The gentleman continued, “After covering the medical expenses, I will use the remaining amount to support your son’s education.”
When the mother, overwhelmed, asked him why he was doing this, he replied, “Your son’s faith in God and his determination to obtain Him at any cost are the reasons for this service.”
If there is faith in the heart and unwavering determination, even God can be found for one rupee.
