01/03/2026

Public and ritualised fear is an embodied condition produced and regulated under a particular organisation of language, social structures and oppressive regimes such as caste.

Using the angle of "emotional historiography" to analyse the ideological approach of Sree Narayana Guru in solving for this fear, Dr. Sebastian Joseph said that Guru diagnosed correctly that a society conditioned to such fear cannot think to fight, to articulate a struggle.

In his work "Arivu", he attacked the foundations that made caste hierarchy inevitable and natural, questioning methodically the structures that systems of knowledge production.

How to save a people who believe/deeply ingrained in their own inferiority? By creating an alternative knowledge system that teaches them to question the existing system, a metaphysical foundation, a democratic, modern and socially inclusive enlightenment of compassion.

Replete with references supporting his lecture and further reading material for the audience, Dr. Sebastian Joseph drew us together into a deep reflective space, resulting in an extremely fruitful post-Janal-lecture discussion.

From an enlightening evening in which ethno-linguist, Padma Shree Prof. Anvita Abbi traced the roots of the ancient Great Andamanese through the study of their language. Presenting over 25 years of linguistics research and field work with huge implications in genetics and ecology, albeit in the short span of an hour, it was a privilege to host such a learned soul at Janal Talks.
