The 198th session of ADDA@MAYA was with film scholar SANJAY MUKHOPADHYAY.

On Satyajit Ray’s birth anniversary, Sanjay Mukhopadhyay led Satyajit er Shohor — a captivating discussion on Ray’s city.
From frames to philosophy, the talk revisited how Ray redefined Indian cinema and how the city lived in his work.

Sanjay Mukhopadhyay is a film scholar, essayist, columnist, translator, and communication expert. He founded the Film Studies department at Jadavpur University and led it for over eight years. He has served as Director of the School of Media, Communication & Cultural Studies and as Director and CEO of Roopkala Kendra, Kolkata. A senior fellow at McGill University’s Centre for Development Area Studies, his work centers on cultural modernity. His books include Anobhijatoder Jonyo Opera and Ritwik Ta**ra.

Amit Dhar, a photojournalist based in Calcutta (now Kolkata), has been working well over four decades and his camaraderie with the camera is as old. City of Calcutta has been the subject of Amit’s lens and roving eyes which helped him capture the essence of the Metropolis in all its grandeur, flavor and vignette. With efflux of time the city has transformed, so did the cityscape. Amit has captured this transformation frame by frame in all its hues and shades and has done a fantastic documentation. ‘Symphony of Calcutta Grilles’ is one such pictorial collection.
