The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy is delighted to have Prof. Giulio Saracino (Department of Physics - University of Naples Federico II) give a special presentation on a new scientific method used in archaeology called muon radiography, or muography.

Archaeologists usually study buried remains using tools such as ground radar or magnetometry, which can detect objects underground but cannot always see very deep. Muography offers a different and more powerful way to look inside large structures. It uses muons—tiny particles that naturally reach the Earth from space and can pass through thick layers of rock. By measuring how many muons pass through an object, scientists can create images that reveal hidden spaces or differences in density, much like an X-ray.

The talk will explain in simple terms how muography works, how it is used in practice, and why it is useful for archaeology. It will also present examples from real studies, including research inside the Egyptian pyramids and beneath the ancient underground areas of Naples, Italy.

One of the best examples of private entities preserving monuments is the tomb of Mah Begum, the wife of Akbar’s favourite poet-general Abdur Rahim Khan-e-Khanan, in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin East.
