Niroj Satpathy’s works are now on view at the Bergen Assembly 2025, Norway.

Drawing from his experience as a night supervisor in the Waste Management Department, Niroj Satpathy’s practice engages with questions of land, community, politics, ecology, and the dynamics of a material-driven society. Rooted in a process-based approach, his work involves collecting materials and objects from garbage dumps, landfills, second-hand markets, natural environments, and other everyday sites. These materials are reshaped or transformed, guided by his reflections on material use and systems of sourcing. While installations form the core of his practice, he also works across drawing, painting, sculpture, as well as photographic, digital, and video documentation.

Our heartiest congratulations, and more power to your voice and work !

Vikrant Bhise’s works are now on view at the Bergen Assembly 2025, Norway.

Vikrant’s artistic practice iterates his commitment to the revolutionary spirit inherent in the Ambedkarite consciousness. At the forefront of the struggle against caste-based domination and its vertiginous implications on land, liberty and labour, he is committed to the expression of social justice, the realisation of enduring reform through activism, and the remembrance of struggles against caste, class and gender-based oppression. Working across monumental scrolls and multi-panelled paintings Vikrant’s iconography is informed and deliberate in its radicality.

Our heartiest congratulations, and more power to your voice and work !

Much thanks to Ravi Agarwal for these images and congratulations on convening the 2025 edition of the Bergen Assembly along with Adania Shibli (a writer and visual culture researcher) and Bergen School of Architecture (BAS, an alternative educational institution).

At The Armory Show 2025 | Vikrant Bhise, They Made Us Wear It (2025)

This large-scale work takes its point of departure from caste-coded practices of humiliation and survival. At its centre is the matka, the earthen pot historically forced onto Mahar communities to hang from the neck, collecting their spit so it would not touch the ground. Around it, fragments of carcasses recall labour that continues to be caste-assigned—cleaning, skinning, burying.

Bhise refuses to treat these as relics of the past. His fractured composition collapses history into the present, making clear that caste violence is not an old wound but a living demand. The body is pressed, contorted, almost indistinguishable from the structures that constrain it.

In this work, the imposed object becomes something else: a mark to be named, confronted, and broken. Bhise does not allow the violence of humiliation to remain hidden—he makes it visible, insistent, and impossible to wear silently any longer.

Special thanks to Camille Okhio for featuring Anant Art, and Vikrant Bhise in Elle Decor’s top 7 picks from the Armory Show 2025.

Now on View | Mycelial Legacies IV: The Ground We Share

This iteration of Deeksha Nath’s curatorial project, Mycelial Legacies, turns its gaze toward the youngest generation of women artists connected to the Faculty, exploring how their practices reflect, resist, and reconfigure what is often referred to as the “Baroda School.” Long associated with intellectual rigour, historical consciousness, and deep engagement with the everyday through radical subjectivity, this legacy is approached here not as a static tradition, but as an evolving, insurgent, and interwoven system of thought and expression.

At The Armory Show 2025 | Bushra Waqas Khan, Rosa-e-Zar (2025)

Nearly five hundred roses, each with up to eighteen petals, cover the surface of Rosa-e-Zar. Derived from stamp-paper motifs, Khan first encloses each rose, then opens and stitches every petal, filling the surface until no space remains. Gold-leafed organza and metallic tones replace red, with black Swarovski crystals marking each centre. The rose—long a cipher of secrecy and love—here becomes dense, heavy, self-supporting. The weight of the fabric defines its form. Khan turns a familiar emblem into something at once ornamental and enduring, where labour and inheritance are carried through repetition.

Now on View | Mycelial Legacies IV: The Ground We Share

Mycelial Legacies IV: The Ground We Share, curated by Deeksha Nath is now on view at Anant Art, Noida. this edition brings together recent and new works by 20 emerging women artists associated with the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Vadodara—one of India’s most influential sites for contemporary art education and experimentation.

Curated as part of a long-term inquiry into the function and transmission of artistic legacy, Mycelial Legacies IV builds on questions central to the project since its inception in 2023: How do institutions seed, sustain, and shape creative generations? How does legacy function as a living, networked force rather than a fixed inheritance?

At The Armory Show 2025 | Probir Gupta, Love Story (2025)

Love Story assembles disjointed parts: a leg without a body, a pelvic bone apart from the rest, a table with only one leg to stand on. Together they suggest a whole that may never be complete — a body, a home, a nation fractured.
At the centre, two fish flank a bride and groom, carved from wooden moulds once used for sandesh, a Bengali sweet. Traditionally, the groom’s family gifts a decorated fish to the bride’s side to mark a union. Here, the motif is recast in the shadow of “ghar wapsi” campaigns in India, which target interfaith couples and force separations.
Calligraphic fragments spell hub (love), dua (prayer) and ummah (community), their spacing suggesting meetings cut short. Fragments of architecture and the Taalpatar Shepai, a toy soldier made from palm leaves, recall both childhood play and the pliable collaborator under colonial rule. In Love Story, love itself becomes a site of resistance. Across geographies, absence and separation are used as tools of power, and love must find ways to endure.

Mycelial Legacies IV | From the Artists’ Archives (Part 2 of 2)

What are the perspectives of women artists who have graduated from the same alma mater at different points of time? What are the similarities, and where do their viewpoints differ?

“At a time when fluid identities are both celebrated and contested, Mycelial Legacies IV surfaces a decade of interconnected practices while foregrounding the voices of women artists—voices that have historically been underrepresented in institutional and art historical narratives. In doing so, the exhibition seeks to reframe the influence of the Faculty of Fine Arts through the lens of those shaping its future.”

In the second part of the campaign that looks at images from the artists’ personal archives, we see years in Baroda, through different lenses.

Mycelial Legacies IV | From the Artists’ Archives (Part 1 of 2)

Deeksha Nath, in her curatorial premise for the show says, “What is the nature of this legacy? It is networked, intergenerational, nourishing and insurgent. The alumni network of the Faculty is widespread, a ‘pioneer impulse’ of graduates which kept the institution ‘liberal’ and ‘cosmopolitan’. The Baroda School, a term loosely coined, has been identified by art making levered to a deep knowledge of art history, in an understanding that rigorous practice and a conceptual framework rooted in the visible and everyday, represented from the vantage of a ‘radical subject position’, as defined by Shivaji Panikkar, are the hallmarks of its artistic pluralism.”

To expand these thoughts, we asked the artists in the show to share some images from Baroda during their years there as students. Swipe through to look at images from the artists’ personal archives.
