The association between Sobha Singh Artist and Dr M. S. Randhawa,ICS was among the longest and most significant artistic relationships in modern Indian art history, beginning in 1926 and continuing uninterrupted till 1986.
Available correspondence between the two stalwarts clearly reveals that Dr. Randhawa recognised the extraordinary talent of the young Sobha Singh at a very early stage and consistently encouraged, promoted and preserved his artistic legacy. His discerning patronage and deep understanding of art indirectly helped Sobha Singh’s work attain international eminence and enduring recognition.
During his distinguished career in various key positions from Rehabilitation Commissioner to the Govt of India, Divisional Commissioner Ambala, Chief Commissioner Chandigarh, and later Chairman of the Punjab Arts Council, Dr. Randhawa ensured acquisition of several paintings of Sobha Singh for prestigious public institutions. These included the Punjab Museum, now known as the Govt Museum and Art Gallery, besides other important cultural establishments.
Their relationship went far beyond official patronage. It was built upon mutual admiration, intellectual exchange and a shared commitment towards preservation and promotion of Indian art and heritage. Letters exchanged over six decades reflect warmth, trust and deep respect between the artist and the visionary administrator-scholar.
An interesting episode highlighting this remarkable association also figures in a documentary presently under production on Dr. M. S. Randhawa.

Handwritten Punjabi letter authored by eminent Sikh scholars and religious personalities Giani Chet Singh(Head Granthi,Darbar Sahib )Haribhajan Singh(Addl Secretary), Principal S. S. Amol, Professor Dr Harnam Singh Shan, and Bhupinder Singh, who were deputed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee during their visit to Sobha Singh at his studio in Andretta. The delegation had been entrusted with reviewing the progress of the commissioned portrait of Guru Nanak Dev prior to its formal release during the historic 500th Parkash Parv celebrations in 1969.
In essence, the letter expresses their deep sense of privilege and good fortune in having the opportunity to meet Sardar Sobha Singh and personally view his paintings. They record their heartfelt admiration for the devotion, artistic excellence, and spiritual depth reflected in his work. From the core of their hearts, they offer prayers that Akal Purakh (the Almighty) may bless him with long life, strength, and continued inspiration, enabling him to successfully complete the noble artistic works he had undertaken to the fullest extent.

Among his works, he painted a contemplative portrayal of Siddhartha Gautama. Notably, a metal image of the Buddha continues to sit snugly beside his easel; a quiet testament to the spiritual influence that accompanied his creative journey.
