The City Palace built by Rana Udai Singh II has been added to and extended by the successive generations of Maharanas, notably by Rana Karan Singh, and Rana Sangram Singh II. Maharana Sajjan Singh and Maharana Fateh Singh further expanded the palace in the 19th century. The building is a unique depiction of the architectural and artistic evolution of Mewar through centuries. More than four centuri

es ago, in A.D. 1559, Rana Udai Singh II the father of Rana Pratap, laid the Foundation of the City Palace after the birth of his grandson Amar Singh I and on the advice of a Hermit Goswami Prem Giriji Maharaj, who had a small hut on this hill. The enormous complex of the old palace standing on a low ridge called Rana Magri (Rana’s Hill) overlooking lake Pichola on the west is a tribute to the constructive genius and architectural taste of the Maharana's of Mewar, ranging from Rana Udai Singh II to the present 76th Custodian of House of Mewar, Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar. It has been so planned and integrated with the original building that the entire structure assumes a shape of one edifice from the exterior, with canopies, towers, domes, cupolas, bastions, beautifully carved balconies and ornamental turrets. The City Palace has always been a self-sufficient developing centre within itself and shall continue to grow into an ideal prototype of a living palace complex.

संग्रहालय ज्ञान को पुस्तकों से आगे सजीव अनुभव में परिवर्तित कर देते हैं

सिटी पैलेस संग्रहालय में आयोजित प्रदर्शनी ‘प्रतिध्वनियाँ : लकड़ी में अनुष्ठानिक विरासत’ में पश्चिम अफ्रीका के 60 से अधिक अनुष्ठानिक वस्तुओं का प्रदर्शन किया गया, जिसने बेनिन, टोगो और नाइजीरिया की परंपराओं की एक दुर्लभ झलक प्रस्तुत की।

इस अंतरराष्ट्रीय प्रदर्शनी का क्यूरेशन फिलिप चार्लियर द्वारा किया गया, तथा इसे महाराणा मेवाड़ चैरिटेबल फाउंडेशन, एलायंस फ्रांसेज़ जयपुर, भारत में फ्रांस के दूतावास और फ्रेंच इंस्टीट्यूट इन इंडिया का सहयोग प्राप्त हुआ। इस आयोजन ने एक अद्वितीय सांस्कृतिक संवाद को जन्म दिया।

मीरा गर्ल्स कॉलेज, हेरिटेज गर्ल्स स्कूल और नीरजा मोदी स्कूल के विद्यार्थियों ने इस प्रदर्शनी का अवलोकन कर प्रत्यक्ष रूप से सीखने और समझने का अवसर प्राप्त किया।

Museums bring learning to life beyond textbooks ✨

The recent exhibition at the City Palace Museum, Echoes: A Ceremonial Heritage in Wood, showcased 60+ ritual objects from West Africa—offering a rare glimpse into traditions from Benin, Togo, and Nigeria. Curated by Philippe Charlier and supported by the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, Alliance Française Jaipur, the Embassy of France in India, and the French Institute in India. This international exhibition created a unique cultural dialogue.

Students from Meera Girls College, Heritage Girls School, and Neerja Modi School visited the exhibition to explore and learn firsthand.

The 4.5-inch QF Howitzer field gun, once deployed across global battlefields during the World Wars, now stands proudly at the Tripolia Gate of the City Palace Museum, Udaipur.

Manufactured in Coventry, UK, this formidable weapon travelled through time—from being horse-drawn across war zones to becoming a preserved artefact of military history. Presented in the 1940s to Maharana Bhupal Singh, it has long been a part of the museum’s legacy.

In 2026, under the guidance of Shriji Huzur Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, the gun underwent meticulous restoration by experts of the Indian Army, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Today, it stands not as a weapon, but as a symbol of history, resilience, and remembrance—welcoming visitors at the gates of heritage.

महाराणा संग्राम सिंह II को मेवाड़ में कला, स्थापत्य और सांस्कृतिक जीवन के विकास में उनके महत्वपूर्ण योगदान के लिए स्मरण किया जाता है। उनके राज्यकाल में मेवाड़ ने समृद्धि और सृजनशीलता का एक उल्लेखनीय दौर देखा।

इसी काल में सिटी पैलेस का त्रिपोलिया द्वार, चौमुखा, सहेलियों की बाड़ी, चीनी चित्रशाला तथा सिसारमा और उदयपुर में स्थित मंदिरों जैसे कई प्रमुख निर्माण कार्य सम्पन्न हुए।
