Kumaranashan and T.K.: A Friendship Beyond Fierce Debates

Kumaranashan was a regular visitor to the Deshabhimani office in Kollam, where T.K. (T.K. Madhavan) worked. Both Ashan and T.K. stood firmly against the social evils of their time, yet their approaches differed. Ashan carried the serene philosophical dignity of a monk, while T.K. embodied the fervor of an agitated populace. Even when their ideological clash reached its peak, their personal bond remained unshaken. On one occasion, during a meeting, Ashan, T.K.Madhavan, Sahodaran Ayyappan, and K.P. Kalyalakkal passionately presented their arguments, fiercely opposing the rival side. Listening from the front row were their wives—Bhanumathi Amma (Ashan’s wife), Narayani Amma (T.K.’s wife), Parvathi Amma (Sahodaran Ayyappan’s wife), and Narayani Amma (K.P. Kalyalakkal’s wife). They sat with bowed heads, saddened, burdened by the thought that the deep friendship among these families might never be the same again. When the session ended and the audience dispersed for refreshments, the women remained sorrowful. But soon, from a distance, they saw the four men approaching, laughing heartily and embracing one another. They were nothing like the fiery speakers from the stage moments earlier. Such was the depth of their friendship.

Alummoottil A.K. Govindan Channar: A Devoted Disciple and Patron of Sree Narayana Guru

Alummoottil A.K. Govindan Channar was a deeply devoted follower who often accompanied Gurudevan on his travels. He led the construction of the Sree Narayana Shashtipoorthi Memorial Hall and enjoyed the Guru’s affection and respect. During the Guru’s journeys, he and his companions stayed in a building in Madras that was lovingly offered by Alummoottil Channar. The Guru had many devotees in Tamil Nadu as well. Among them was Vallinayakan Pillai, a prominent lawyer from Tirunelveli, who later renounced his legal profession to embrace the life of a sanyasi. In Tamil Nadu, devotees would come to have darshan of the Guru at the very building that Alummoottil Channar had arranged and dedicated for this purpose.

“Did Kerala Truly Recognize T.K. Madhavan’s Legacy?”

Has Kerala truly been able to understand T. K. Madhavan, a member of the Alummoottil Tharavad, and give him the recognition he deserves? He played a distinctive role in connecting the Indian National Congress with the backward and marginalized sections of Kerala society. Through his tireless efforts, he helped guide the freedom movement along the paths of social reform and renaissance. As a journalist, he carved out his own path and took the lead in running a newspaper titled Deshabhimani. He was actively involved in multiple reform movements simultaneously—prohibition campaigns, struggles for freedom of movement, fights against social inequalities, temple entry movements, and the broader cause of social equality. In 1102 M.E. (Malayalam Era), he became the organizational secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP). Under his exceptional organizational leadership, the SNDP witnessed unprecedented growth and expansion.

Alummoottil T.K. Madhavan’s Turning Point: From Social Reform to National Movement

T.K. Madhavan’s efforts through the SNDP Yogam, the legislative council, and the media—aimed at broad goals like civic equality and inter-community unity—were not yielding the desired results. It was during this time that the Congress began formulating major programs with Swaraj (self-rule) as the ultimate goal. As a preparatory step toward that, the Congress sought to unite all sections of people and shape them into a cohesive Indian identity, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Madhavan recognized the growing importance of the national movement. He believed that aligning with this mainstream movement was the only way to achieve his objectives. In 1921, with the symbolic holding of a Congress conference at Ottapalam, the national movement made its entry into Kerala. Although meetings were subsequently held in various places, there were only a few who possessed strong patriotic fervor. At that time, caste-based activities were still dominant. In 1921, upon learning about a Congress meeting at Mannanthala, Madhavan attended it. The meeting was rather ritualistic in nature. He requested an opportunity to speak and delivered a powerful speech. However, the response was lukewarm—suggesting that the time was not yet ripe and that they should wait. Disheartened, Madhavan returned. Soon after, he learned that Gandhi would be arriving in Tirunelveli, and he set out to meet him. Though not a Congress member, Madhavan took it upon himself to awaken the Congress. With that, history began to change its course…

A Friendship Forged in Thought and Conversation: Prof. M. K. Sanu Remembers A. P. Udayabhanu of Alummoottil Tharavad

A. P. Udayabhanu’s closest friend was the renowned Malayalam literary critic M. K. Sanu, popularly known as Sanu Master. Recalling his memories with Udayabhanu in an interview published in The Hindu on July 22, 2016, Sanu Master said: “Udayabhanu loved walking very much. We used to go for morning walks together, and later even for walks at night. The morning routine was always the same — he would insist on waking me up, and after having tea at his house, we would set out for our walk. In the early days, it was Ayyappan and I who went walking together. Later, Udayabhanu joined us. The city was very different in those days. Animated discussions were a regular part of our morning walks. One among us was a believer, while the other was an atheist. There were intense discussions and sometimes even arguments, but everything remained friendly. Our night walks usually began around 10 o’clock. Once, he even expressed a desire to walk all the way to Kottayam along the railway tracks. It was I who persuaded him not to do it.”

The Crucial Role of Women in the Vaikom Satyagraha

Women played a pivotal role in the Vaikom Satyagraha, often displaying extraordinary courage and resilience. On June 5, 1924, in the early hours, Nagammal (the wife of Periyar), Muthuswamy’s wife, and the wife of Alumoottil Govindan Channar, along with three other women, approached the Vaikom temple to challenge the discriminatory temple entry practices. Confronted by Brahmin priests opposing their entry, they boldly engaged in a heated argument over access to the temple premises. Undeterred by opposition, Nagammal led the group in performing poojas (prayers) at the temple's entrance, continuing their protest even under harsh conditions. The following day, they repeated their acts of defiance, carrying out their worship despite heavy rains, symbolizing their unwavering support for the movement and their determination to eradicate untouchability.

Alummoottil Meda: The Historic Ancestral Home That Inspired a Malayalam Psychological Classic

One of the finest psychological thrillers in Malayalam cinema was inspired by a remarkable story written by Madhu Muttom. The inspiration for his mysterious and suspense-filled narratives is believed to have come from a historic ancestral mansion where countless untold stories lie buried. This is Alummoottil Meda, an ancient and renowned Ezhava ancestral house located at Muttom, Harippad, in the heart of Central Travancore. Built in the traditional Kerala architectural style, the mansion continues to captivate visitors with its grandeur and timeless charm. During the nineteenth century, Alummoottil Meda was an immensely prosperous estate that paid an annual land tax of ₹10,000 along with ten para of paddy—an indication of its extraordinary wealth and influence. The Alummoottil family is believed to have established the estate sometime between 1700 and 1729. At a time when untouchability prevailed, this Ezhava family was granted the distinguished status of Channan by the Maharaja and was recognized as a respected landlord family. The family's prominence is further reflected in the fact that its head was said to have owned and traveled by a motor car even before the Maharaja of Travancore acquired one. The present mansion, built in 1906, is also remembered as a place where Sree Narayana Guru stayed and rested on several occasions. The Alummoottil family made significant financial and organizational contributions to the Sree Narayana movement, playing an important role in supporting its growth and reformist activities. T. K. Madhavan was one of the most distinguished members of the illustrious Alummoottil family (tharavad).

Bhanumathi Amma Preserves the Legacy of Alummoottil T. K. Madhavan

The death of T. K. Madhavan at the age of 44 plunged his family into crisis. During this difficult time, Bhanumathi Amma, the wife of Kumaranashan and a close friend of Madhavan, stood by the family with deep compassion. Madhavan’s life story survives today largely because of Bhanumathi Amma. Out of affection and respect, she published his biography in two volumes through the Sharada Book Depot at the Kollam Sreeramvilasam Press in 1936, revealing the depth and breadth of her devotion. T. K. Madhavan: Childhood Experiences That Ignited a Life of Social Revolution

T. K. Madhavan's lifelong commitment to social reform and equality had its origins in the humble village school where he received his earliest education. While learning the basics of writing and arithmetic under the caste-conscious village teacher Nariyinchil Ashan, Madhavan, considered "untouchable" because of his Ezhava background, witnessed the humiliating discrimination that pervaded everyday life. The teacher would discipline upper-caste students by striking them directly with a cane, but to avoid being "polluted" by touch, he threw the cane at lower-caste children instead. Unable to tolerate this degrading practice, the young Madhavan protested after seeing his close friend Govindan and later himself subjected to such treatment. With youthful defiance, he reportedly declared, "Take back your writing board; give me my palm-leaf manuscript," and walked out of the school. Though he continued his education elsewhere, the spark of resistance kindled by that experience never died. He subsequently studied under Karippuzha Ashan, a Christian teacher, but even there he had to endure caste discrimination, including the custom of stepping aside whenever members of the Nair community approached on the road, or risk punishment if they unknowingly crossed their path. After a year, he studied Sanskrit under Kochukunju Ashan of Mavelikkara and later learned English under the lawyer P. Subramania Pillai of Nangyarkulangara, where, for the first time, Ezhava, Nair, and Christian students sat together on the same bench and teachers freely touched all students alike. This experience profoundly influenced his outlook and strengthened his belief in equality. He later joined the Government School at Kayamkulam, where he became proficient in English and even translated some of his father's legal documents from English into Malayalam. Yet he continued to suffer ridicule and caste-based humiliation from upper-caste classmates and members of the public, leaving lasting emotional scars. After passing the Third Form examination, he enrolled at the Royal School in Thiruvananthapuram for higher studies. Although he possessed a deep love for learning, the death of his father when he was seventeen and the worsening of the tuberculosis that had troubled him for years prevented him from completing his high school education. Nevertheless, he went on to acquire extensive knowledge across many disciplines and became an eloquent speaker in both Malayalam and English. Despite belonging to one of the wealthiest and most respected Ezhava families of the time, Madhavan could not escape the cruel realities of untouchability. Though chronic illness hindered his formal education, it never diminished his thirst for knowledge or his determination to challenge social injustice. Even as a student, he displayed a keen interest in public affairs, forming an organization with his classmates, and in 1906 he spent a year recuperating from tuberculosis. The experiences of discrimination, resilience, and intellectual awakening during his formative years became the enduring flame that later inspired him to transform Kerala's local struggles against caste oppression into a national movement with the support of the Indian National Congress.
