Today we would like to officially announce that we have joined forces with "Gruppo Storico Edelweiss".
Our common interest in history has led us to cooperate before and it was the best choice for both groups to unite forces and work together towards the common goal of promoting the history of the Austro-Hungarian Army in the First World War.

According to the motto of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen "Viribus Unitis", we will work together towards our goal.

The yearly Christmas event went well, together with Gruppo Storico Edelweiss portraying Infantry Regiment “Ernst Ludwig Grand Duke of Hesse” No. 14. We descended to the Edelweiß Stellung where we setup in the Soldatenheim. Once setup, we conducted small patrols/lookouts at the front lines. It is quite a feeling to go from the small warm barracks to the blistering cold of the trenches, only to come back and enjoy again the warmth of the barracks and laughter of the fellow soldiers. As always, doing these events gives one a small insight to just how difficult it could be to be a soldier living in these kinds of conditions, and just how important it is to keep warm to survive the elements. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Frohe Weihnachten, Buon Natale!

Unlike all of our climbs, including climbing the Hexenstein/Sass di Stria Feratta, this climb on the via Ferrata on the Col dei Bos we did with modern equipment and climbing gear. It was quite a nice climb, getting to the top to see what the Italian positions looked like in the highly contested Val Travenanzes being overlooked by the Schreckenstein and Tofana. At the top was a crudely and quickly made bunker with firing positions looking at Austro-Hungarian strong points in the valley. This area saw many attacks, including one of the largest mines made during an attack on the Schreckenstein/Castelletto.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. We celebtated Christmas and the New Year by having our own party at the front. Snow shoes were mandatory to get to the positions, and snow needed to be shoveled to get the doors and windows open. Starting a fire was a priority to not get frostbite and to warm up a little. We were only there for a couple of days, while the soldiers had to endure the entire winter over many years. One gets a small taste of what the soldiers went through during winter and the appreciation of comradship in the times of Christmas and the New Year.

It has been awhile since we have posted, however, work and plans still continue to be done from time to time at the Edelweiß Stellung. Here are some of our latest pictures including a small trek up the Settsass to see the postions there.

Frohe Weihnachten an alle! This past weekend we decided to have a winter/Christmas event. As you can see, there was a lot of work to be done just to get down to the barracks. While a mixture of period snow shoveling and a snow machine were used to make an entrance pathway to the fort, clearing some room at the barracks was done all by shoveling. We had to utilize our snow shoes to get down to the position, as in most spots the snow was very deep. We chose the officer's barracks to stay in this time as it is much smaller and easier to heat. We had to get to the roof to clear the snow away from the stove pipe as to not smoke out the building. Once down and settled, we had to warm our feet up as the snow had soaked through our boots. Events like this give us only a small insight as to the hardships endured by the troops who not only had to fight the enemy, but also fight to survive the elements everyday. One really gets the chance to appreciate their resilience against a hostile environment.
