«Mechanics is the paradise of the mathematical sciences, because by means of it one comes to the fruits of mathematics.» (Manuscript E, folio 8v).⚙️✨

When Leonardo da Vinci moved to Milan, his scientific studies took a massive leap forward, fueled by a city buzzing with intellectuals and scientists. Mechanics, geometry, the study of weights, and arithmetic became some of his greatest passions, inspiring him to design everything from simple cranks and pulleys to incredibly complex machines.

🛠️ At the museum, we have an entire room dedicated to mechanics and the study of weights. Every single machine is built to scale and fully interactive, so you can experience the science hidden within!

🚲 The drawing of this bicycle can be found in the Codex Atlanticus… but no, it’s not one of Leonardo machines!

It’s the 1970s, and the “Laboratorio di restauro del libro antico”, located in Grottaferrata (near Rome), receives a very important commission: to restore Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus. It is a long and complex undertaking, due to the poor condition of the codex. 📚
The restoration reveals a previously invisible charcoal drawing of a bicycle on a page numbered 133v. The bike’s appearance is particularly modern… and this is what immediately raises many doubts among scholars about the authenticity of the design.

By now, everyone agrees that it is not Leonardo’s work, but then who made that drawing? There are two main theories: some argue it is a drawing by a young pupil of Leonardo, while others believe it is merely the work of a forger, likely created very recently.
What is the truth? 💭

The paddle boat is one of the most mechanically fascinating hydraulic machines! Its design can be found in the Codex Atlanticus, f.945r: Leonardo likely drew the machine’s plans around 1487-1489, shortly after he had moved to Milan.

At the heart of the boat’s operation is the conversion of a rectilinear reciprocating motion into a uniform rotary motion. How does it work?
Take a look!

If you love Da Vinci and Florence, this tour is for you! Once a month, we take you through the city’s most iconic spots to uncover the traces Leonardo left behind.

🗓️ On May, the tour will be on Sunday, the 17th.

No aluminum tanks, no wrist computers, no neoprene…

In the Codex Atlanticus Leonardo drew a leather diving suit complete with a mask and glass goggles. To breathe, he devised flexible tubes reinforced with metal rings to withstand pressure, connected to floats.

In his notes, Leonardo mentions the use of san ballasts to allow the diver to descend to the seabed and an air pocket to ascend.
The genius even included a knife and a small skin for urine.

It was the Greek philosopher and mathematician Heraclides who coined the expression “scaphé andros”, the term from which the modern word “scafandro” derives.
And before Leonardo, there was certainly no shortage of studies on underwater breathing apparatus, just consider that the first attempts date back to Alexander the Great!
But we have to wait until the 18th century for versions more similar to those used today.

What if the “Battle of Anghiari” were still hidden in Palazzo Vecchio?
This story remains shrouded in mystery… maybe!

And if you’d like to discover other stories connect the artist and scientist with the city of Florence, join our outdoor guided tour “I luoghi e le macchine di Leonardo Da Vinci”.

The next date will be Sunday, May 17.
