Nilufar Gallery Historical and contemporary art & design pieces exclusively selected by Nina Yashar since 1979. Via della Spiga 32 | Viale Lancetti 34
Milano, IT

Starting from the end of the Nineties, the Gallery knew how to cut out its own space and become the reference point to lovers of historical design as well as to people following the evolution of contemporary design, above all within that more learned, poetic and visionary area shifting between production and contemporary art. Nina Yashar, the gallery founder, works with her sister Nilu and a team

of five people. Nilufar took part in several editions of Pavillon des Arts et du Design in Paris and is always present at Design Miami/Basel. Nilufar has its own small manifesto, composed of three words: Discovering, Crossing, Creating. Discovering Novecento is the century of design, a source of extraordinary stories and objects which will be dealt with again for a long time, waiting just for the right time to come out of the oblivion. According to Nilufar's vision, modern antique dealing is an old definition. It is necessary to shift towards a less vague word, searching for names, projects, schools, manufactures, countries making history and deserving to be proposed again. Crossing The history of taste is a never-ending exercise of decomposition and re-composition, just like a kaleidoscope... This continuous joining together of pieces and traditions houses an open eye, heedless of labels, able to cross fences created by time, geography and cultural matrixes, aware that assonances and contrasts can be two sides of the same coin. This is the idea of Crossings, the name of two successful exhibitions Nilufar held in 1999 and 2000, a true invitation to build new visions of the world, being far more personal and freer. Creating Milan is an interesting lab and a privileged point to observe the euphoric and restless scene of design. Nilufar gives life to projects, editions, site-specific shows and publications, working both with great masters and emerging authors. Nilufar is operating in the scouting of new talents. Creating means bringing about occasions, sparkles. It means also obtaining new spaces and filling them with value for the future. Here in Italy we know how to do it: Renaissance was born here!

Within the Nilufar Grand Hotel, Filippo Carandini (.studio) conceives a master bedroom shaped by intuition rather than composition, where colour, light, and form unfold as a dreamlike nocturnal landscape. The Nephe bed headboard and chest of drawers, designed for Nilufar Edition, establish the room’s atmospheric rhythm through hand-painted surfaces layered with half-tones drawn from blues, greens, and yellow, punctuated by silver-leaf details.

The narrative expands through glimpsed presences: a carpet evoking an aerial view of the earth at night grounds the space, while the sculptural silhouettes of the Cernos valet stand and the Linae double mirror emerge between recognition and abstraction. Completing the setting, the Kalym coffee table in sand-cast bronze with a deep black patina introduces a powerful material presence, in dialogue with the Knossiana floor lamp.

Designed by Carlo Lorenzetti, the Copper Shelf CS1 and wall lamp transform flat copper plates into sculptural volumes, inspired by his background in pottery. Single drawn contours guide the cut, creating intersecting curves that merge geometry and organic movement.

Each element is polished before welding so the final assembly bears vivid heat marks, a trace of the intense energy, rare skill, and material commitment required to shape copper into a dynamic and harmonious form that balances structure and fluidity.

The Copper shelf by Carlo Lorenzetti () is part of Le Pied-à-Terre Cosmopolite: a space conceived by Nina Yashar as the home of a cosmopolitan collector, a compact space yet intensely lived in, where every object tells a story and design becomes a natural part of everyday life. A 70-sqm apartment into a layered and vibrant environment where collectible design, vintage masterpieces and contemporary creations coexist in perfect harmony.

With Le Pied-à-Terre Cosmopolite, Nina Yashar () imagines the apartment of a cultivated traveller, where rare design pieces collected over time coexist with effortless elegance. Intimate in scale yet rich in atmosphere, the 70 sqm space unfolds into a living room defined by W***y Rizzo’s Super C sofa and Gabriella Crespi’s iconic Fungo lamp, as the Aphanès low table by Roberto Sironi and Palmalisa Zantedeschi introduces an almost archetypal dimension.

Within this sequence, StudioDanielK’s () intimate cocktail lounge explores a sophisticated interplay of copper, bronze, parchment, semi-precious stones, and exclusive textiles. The narrative continues in the dining area, where Marco Lavit’s () Hexa table is set beneath the delicate glow of a Murano glass chandelier by Napoleone Martinuzzi. Carlo Lorenzetti’s () Copper Shelf gives way to the master bedroom, conceived as a precious setting for vintage masterpieces by Osvaldo Borsani, Gabriella Crespi, and Venini.

VON PELT Atelier () the international collective led by Spanish designer Désirée Mejer, makes its debut at Nilufar with Deconstructed Bourgeoisie, a collection of lighting pieces and mirrors that reactivates the symbolic and aesthetic charge of historical decorative objects.

Crafted from repurposed silver artefacts dating from the 1950s to the 1970s, alongside vintage Murano elements and antique crystal, the works transform objects once associated with bourgeois domestic display into eccentric contemporary presences.

Tea services, trays and ornamental figures once displayed behind glass are revived as functional art. Composed of silver-plated metal and Murano glass, the pieces evoke the theatrical richness of historical still-life traditions, recalling the worlds of Benvenuto Cellini, Giuseppe Arcimboldo and Albrecht Dürer. Through light and reflection, these once-silent ornaments return to life, carrying their histories into the present.

VON PELT’s practice engages the language of the objet trouvé as a critical tool for rethinking the nature of objects and the role of context in shaping meaning. More than a collection, Deconstructed Bourgeoisie is an exercise in cultural reinterpretation: precise, theatrical, and unapologetically contemporary.

At Nilufar Depot, Nilufar Grand Hotel unfolds as a dreamlike exploration of hospitality through design. Curated by Nina Yashar, the exhibition brings together vintage masterpieces, contemporary works and bespoke Nilufar Edition pieces in a layered narrative of interiors, materiality and artistic vision.

James Mont’s vintage chairs reveal his fascination with Eastern heritage through bold colour and decorative form. Crafted in orange lacquered wood with a faux bamboo effect, they reinterpret traditional Asian motifs through a distinctly stylised lens, enriched by carved backrests reminiscent of bamboo leaves.

The Peak District armchair by Nilufar Edition appears at first as a classical form, evoking the poised elegance of traditional interiors. Yet its silhouette is reimagined through three-dimensional programming systems, where irregular cuts and controlled distortions transform a familiar archetype into an experimental presence.

Designed by Gabriella Crespi between 1970 and 1974, Heron belongs to her whimsical Small Animals series, a celebration of nature rendered through precious materials and refined forms. Crafted by Barovier & Toso, the sculpture combines gilded metal with a luminous Murano glass egg delicately nestled within its body.

Completing the selection, Cabinet Sole by Filippo Carandini (.studio) is part of the Muse collection, inspired by the timeless allure of the Sun, Moon and stars. Created in collaboration with Fonderia Artistica Campagner, each bronze piece follows a meticulous artisanal process, revealing the material’s natural beauty through unique patinas and surfaces.

Few designers of the fin de siècle developed a vision as distinctive and unconventional as Carlo Bugatti. Moving from the exotic and symbolic language of his early works to the almost proto-modernist experimentation of the first decade of the 1900s, the selection reveals a singular aesthetic shaped by eclectic references, artisanal virtuosity, and an uncompromising devotion to material richness.

Comprising a rare mirror, table, and chair, the ensemble brings together Bugatti’s unmistakable lexicon of ebonized wood, painted parchment, repoussé copper, pewter, mother-of-pearl, and silk. Precious yet radical in spirit, these intensely crafted works remain deeply coveted today for their rarity, poetic eccentricity, and enduring decorative power.

The result of Nilufar Grand Hotel is a layered and dynamic environment where historical and contemporary objects coexist. Each element contributes to a collective narrative, transforming hospitality into an immersive, relational experience of continuous discovery.

This pair of late XIX Century Chinese table lamps stands as a harmonious blend of craftsmanship and elegance. Crafted in hand-painted bronze using the intricate cloisonné technique, they are finely topped with rafia lampshades.

Completing the composition, a pair of armchairs, manufactured by Grosfeld House in the United States in the 1940s, adds a note of refined comfort, upholstered in Lelièvre () Paris Oxide fabric in the Cendre colorway—a tactile, textured textile defined by an irregular weave and a distinctive luminescence, where metallic tones enhance its subtle sheen.

These vintage lounge armchairs are a distinctive example of American mid-century design. With angular backs positioned on opposite outer sides, the design allows the chairs to be joined as a pair, expressing the era’s refined and playful dialogue between form and function.

The lounge is completed with cc-tapis () carpets, whose textures and colours define areas of gathering, enhancing the tactile and visual richness of the space.

Within the lounge of Nilufar Grand Hotel, a rare Murano chandelier manufactured by Industrie Vetraie Artistiche Murano (I.V.A.M.) in Italy during the early 1930s embodies the spirit of innovation that defined one of the island’s most forward-thinking furnaces, founded by Libero Vitali. Created in a period of close collaboration with pioneering designers such as Flavio Poli, the piece reflects the emergence of the Novecento aesthetic, where sculptural solidity and volumetric presence replaced traditional ornamentation.

Crafted in hand-blown Murano glass, the chandelier departs from the classical Venetian multi-arm typology, embracing a striking architectural composition. Its tiered disc form, composed of progressively diminishing circular elements, introduces a sense of rhythm and abstraction, resonating with Art Deco elegance and subtle Futurist dynamism.

Beneath it, a rare vintage low table crafted by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne in the 1960s reveals intricate, multicolored engravings that reflect the duo’s mastery in blending ancient mythological motifs with modern design. Known for their sculptural approach to bronze and their experiments with chemical patinas, their work remains highly sought after, rare on the market, and a testament to their innovative spirit.

Nearby, the Lazy Bean armchairs by Nilufar Edition evoke the gentle irregularity of a bean in its most natural form. Defined by the softened, organic contours of their seats and backrests, they encourage a relaxed, unstructured way of sitting, inviting moments of pause and quiet ease. More than a seating piece, it reconsiders idleness as an intentional act of care — an everyday gesture of well-being towards oneself, where comfort unfolds as a subtle, personal luxury.

The journey at Nilufar Grand Hotel unfolds in the lobby, where Lola Montes’ sculptural reception desk sets a tactile, expressive tone, beneath a monumental calla chandelier that diffuses light with ethereal presence.

At the intersection of artwork and functional object, this custom piece marks a significant evolution in Lola Montes’ () multidimensional practice. Sculpted magnolia blossoms drift and cascade across a deep, crystalline violet ground, evoking a suspended sense of motion. The clay is freely hand-modeled, allowing the narrative to emerge through the firing process, where heat and chance shape texture, depth, and tone. A Pompeii-red countertop enlivens the composition, its vividness the result of a carefully developed palette. Each tile is individually sculpted in a workshop near Mount Etna, incorporating volcanic ash that lends both material complexity and subtle variation.

Defining the path as precious space dividers, Zakuro textiles by Marco Mastroianni and Giovanni Iacono introduce chromatic and decorative richness. Designed specifically for the exhibition, Les Ombres d’Or, placed at the centre of the installation, interprets the poetic use of gold leaf in imperial Japanese textiles and interiors, evoking fragments of golden light crossed by deep burgundy and red shadows, like filtered light in sacred spaces.
