MAY 8: VENICE ON STRIKE

As a cultural workers we are in solidarity with the cultural workers who have called the MAY 8 STRIKE to collectively say no to the genocide pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale. Today marks the first Biennale strike called since 1968, and at a larger scale than then. The artists and workers united for the liberation of Palestine!

The research of Jonas Staal deals with the themes of democracy and the law.
With a keen interest in issues of social justice and the right to self-determination of individuals and peoples, in 2012 the artist founded the New World Summit, an artistic and political organisation that develops alternative parliaments for stateless political movements.

The event will provide an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Jonas Staal’s work and to view a selection of his pieces.

The event will be hosted by Gabi Scardi and will be held in English.

We stand in solidarity with the signatories of ANGA’s demands and support their call to exclude Israel from the Venice Biennale.
The widening war we are witnessing did not appear overnight. It grows from years of normalizing Israel’s genocide in Gaza and its 78 year occupation of Palestine, allowing institutions to treat it as an exception.
Culture must not provide cover for genocide and the brutal imperial aggression being unleashed on Iran and Lebanon.

No genocide pavilion.
No artwashing in our name.

The Exhibition entitled In Minor Keys  will be open to the public from Saturday 9 May to Sunday 22 November 2026.

The 111 invited participants of this exhibition – among them, individual artists, collaborative duos, collectives, and artist-led organisations – hail from many geographies and regions selected by Koyo with particular attention to resonances, affinity, and and possible convergences between practices, even when far apart. In looking to artists working in Salvador, Dakar, San Juan, Beirut, Paris, or Nashville, for example, Koyo sought to envision how their ingenuity, breadth of material experimentation, and visionary ideas bear connections to other artists and movements in simultaneity. In this spirit, In Minor Keys expands upon Koyo’s relational geography of encounters with artists over her lifetime.

is a Swiss artist born in Zurich whose research-driven, process-oriented practice explores the legacies of colonialism, spatial memory, and social and ecological justice. Through multimedia installations, he brings micro-histories and diverse narrative forms into dialogue.
