Il MAT | Museo Arti e Tradizioni nasce con l’intento di tutelare, promuovere e valorizzare il patrimonio materiale e immateriale del territorio di Ottana, attraverso un percorso che accompagna e trasporta il visitatore indietro nel tempo alla scoperta della storia, dei riti e delle tradizioni locali. La struttura ospita una sezione permanente dedicata al Carnevale, ricorrenza fortemente radicata e
tanto attesa dalla comunità, che da sempre vi partecipa in maniera spontanea. Il Carnevale di Ottana, tra i più celebri e antichi dell’isola, è composto da tre figure fondamentali: Boe, Merdule e Filonzana. L’esposizione consente al visitatore di conoscere nel dettaglio la mascherata ottanese, che deriva da ancestrali riti propiziatori. Il percorso unisce pannelli esplicativi e immagini storiche, contenuti audiovisivi e manufatti artigianali, con una ricca collezione di maschere facciali lignee, sapientemente realizzate da maestranze locali, che da generazioni tramandano l’arte dell’intaglio di padre in figlio. Il museo dispone inoltre di una sezione dedicata alla storia della Diocesi Medioevale di Ottana e alla Cattedrale Romanica di San Nicola. L’edificio, consacrato nel 1160, al suo interno custodisce un’importante pala trecentesca, che rappresenta l’unica raffigurazione pittorica del Giudice Mariano IV d’Arborea. Il MAT si pone come luogo di incontro che favorisce scambi e relazioni, promuove la partecipazione attiva alle attività del museo coinvolgendo la comunità, le numerose associazioni culturali e i vari artigiani e artisti presenti a Ottana. Ospita periodicamente mostre temporanee e propone laboratori didattici per le scuole di ogni ordine e grado. Su prenotazione, organizza inoltre visite guidate alla Cattedrale di San Nicola e alle botteghe dei mascherai. The MAT | Museum of Arts and Traditions has been created with the intent to protect, promote and enhance the material and intangible heritage of the territory of Ottana, through a path that accompanies and transports the visitor back in time to the discovery of history, local rites and traditions. The museum is located in the historic center of the town, inside an old manor house. A permanent section within
the structure is dedicated to Carnival, which is a deeply rooted and long-awaited event by the community that
has always taken part spontaneously. Three fundamental figures, Boe, Merdule, and Filonzana, make up the Carnival of Ottana, which is one of the island’s most famous and ancient traditions. The exhibition allows the visitor to know in detail the Octanese masquerade, which derives from ancestral propitiatory rites. The path encompasses informative panels and historical pictures, audiovisual material, and handmade items, along with a substantial collection of wooden face masks expertly made by local workers, who have passed on the art of carving from father to son for generations. The museum also has a section dedicated to the history of the Medieval Diocese of Ottana and the Romanesque
Cathedral of San Nicola. The building, consecrated in 1160, contains an important 14th century altarpiece, which represents the only pictorial representation of Judge Mariano IV of Arborea. The MAT is a meeting place that promotes exchanges and relationships, promotes active participation in the activities of the museum involving the community, the numerous cultural associations and the various artisans
and artists present in Ottana. Temporary exhibitions are held periodically and educational workshops are available
for schools of all levels. Guided tours of the Cathedral of San Nicola and the mask shops are available on request.
