Defined by the great Swedish botanist Linnaeus principes plantarum, palm trees have always had a central role in the symbolic imagery of man. Symbol of victory, of the Ascension, of protection, of fruitfulness and fertility; his presence has been constant in religions and, consequently, figurative arts. Palm trees were also subject of philosophical speculation: Carl Gustav Jung believed that in th
e unconscious of man, as ancestor, the archetype of the Palm can be found. The soul of man is like a Palm tree: the unconscious is merely its shadow. In relation to the centrality that the palm tree has had in the history of man is explained the particular interest of the botanical garden of Palermo on him, thanks also to the contribution of art and nature enthusiasts, the Botanical Garden received as gift from Italian masters of painting more artworks to constitute a collection of art inspired by Palm trees. This collection, is today located in the Calidarium and enriches and completes the “Museum" consisting of the spectacular collection of Palm trees in the area, which the garden, since its Foundation, wanted to adopt, not neglecting to enhance and improve it over time. This project intends to re-evaluate and contextualise nowadays the Museum's collection of palms, trying, thanks to the financial support of Operativa - arte that will produce the entire project, to engage a new generation of artists who have come out in recent years. The selected artists will be invited to stay in Palermo for two weeks, period that will be dedicated to an aesthetic and anthropological research on palm trees, as well as the production of works of art. The works will be produced specifically for the spaces to be localised within the Botanical Garden, and will face the subject (palm trees) with a current aesthetic language, also considering the impact as a plant in urban/home environment. This first part of the project will conclude with an exhibition open to the public, which serves as presentation of new works and redevelopment of the Palm Museum considering that some of the works will be donated to the Museum to increase and update the collection. During the two weeks of the artists' stay, there might take place conferences and presentations of the project in spaces outside the botanical garden as in art museums and university faculty. In the period before the beginning of the project Operativa-arte, L’A project space along with some of the artists already selected, are already collecting and paginating with the help of a specialised graphic designer of material relating to the history of Palm trees, historical notes and considerations by artists over time, all related to images, photographs and artworks. The intent is to create a publication on the project, discussed with artists and not just a book of notes/catalogue, with the desire to build an archive of the works of the masters that are already present in the collection and tell the processes that will bring artists to create works for the exhibition. In this sense there will be looking for partners to support the publication. The second part of the project intends to build one or more stages of an itinerant palm Museum, where the works of young people in dialogue with some selected from the collection of the Museum of the previous generation, can tell about a conceptual and aesthetic history of the plant. First among these stages, the gallery Operativa - arte of Rome.

Definita dal grande botanico svedese Linneo principes plantarum, la palma ha avuto da sempre un ruolo centrale nell’immaginario simbolico dell’uomo. Simbolo della vittoria, dell’ascensione, della protezione, della fecondità e della fertilità; la sua è stata una presenza costante nelle religioni e,conseguentemente, nelle arti figurative. La palma è stata, anche, oggetto di speculazione filosofica:infatti Carl Gustav Jung riteneva che nell’inconscio dell’uomo, quale progenitore, si ritrova l’archetipo della palma. L’anima stessa dell’uomo è la palma: l’inconscio non sarebbe altro che la sua ombra. In relazione alla centralità che la palma ha avuto nella storia dell’uomo va spiegato il particolare interesse dell’Orto Botanico di Palermo nei suoi confronti, grazie anche al contributo di appassionati d’arte e di natura l’Orto botanico ha ricevuto in dono da maestri di pittura italiani una quantità di opere tale da poter costituire una collezione d’arte ispirata alle palme. Tale collezione, ha oggi sede nel Calidarium e va ad arricchire e completare il “museo” in vivo costituito dalla spettacolare collezione di palme in piena area, di cui l’Orto, sin dalla sua costituzione, ha voluto dotarsi, non trascurando di potenziarla e di migliorarla nel tempo. Il progetto in questione intende rivalutare e ricontestualizzare al giorno d’oggi la collezione del museo delle palme, cercando, grazie al supporto economico di Operativa - arte che produrrà l’intero progetto , di coinvolgere una nuova generazione di artisti che si sono affermati negli ultimi anni. Gli artisti selezionati saranno verranno invitati a soggiornare a Palermo per l’arco di due settimane, periodo che sarà dedicato ad una ricerca estetica e antropologica sulla palma, oltre che alla produzione di opere d’arte. Le opere saranno prodotte specificatamente per degli spazi da localizzare all’ interno dell’orto botanico, e affronteranno il soggetto (palma) con un linguaggio estetico attuale, considerandone anche l’impatto come pianta nel contesto urbano/ domestico. Questa prima parte del progetto si concluderà con una mostra aperta al pubblico che serva come presentazione delle nuove opere e riqualificazione del museo delle palme considerando che alcune delle opere realizzate verrano donate al museo per incrementare e aggiornarne la collezione. Nell’arco delle due settimane di soggiorno degli artisti, non é esclusa la possibiltà di conferenze e presentazioni del progetto in spazi all’esterno dell’orto botanico, come musei d’arte e facoltà universitarie. Nel lasso di tempo che precede l’inizio del progetto la direzione di Operativa - arte , L’A project space insieme ad alcuni degli artisti già selezionati, stanno già raccogliendo e impaginando con l’aiuto di un grafico specializzato del materiale inerente alla storia della Palma, cenni storici e riflessioni di vari artisti nel tempo, tutto correlato da immagini, fotografie
ed opere. L’intento è quello di creare una pubblicazione attorno al progetto, dialogata con gli artisti e non solo, un libro di appunti/ catalogo, con la volontà di costruire anche un’archivio delle opere dei maestri che sono già presenti nella collezione e raccontare i processi che porteranno gli artisti a realizzare le opere per la mostra. In questo senso si procederà alla ricerca di partner che sostengano la pubblicazione. La seconda parte del progetto intende costruire una o piú tappe di un museo delle palme itinerante, in cui le opere dei giovani, in dialogo con alcune selezionate dalla collezione del museo della generazione precedente, possano raccontare su un piano estetico e concettuale la storia della pianta. Operativa Arte Contemporanea was established in 2012 after Carlo Pratis's seven years experience between Rome and Berlin with a gallery devoted to historical avant-garde artists of the 70 's. The project is exclusively dedicated to the most contemporary scene of recent generations, with the main aim to connect the nascent art scene with institutional realities. In fact, parallel to the internal activity at the Gallery, which saw the alternation of numerous collective and individual art exhibitions dedicated to a personal recognition of the young resources present on the national territory, the Gallery has now supported and produced numerous external projects in collaboration with museums and public institutions in order to bring the young contemporary scene in institutional contexts with more far-reaching projects. Among the most significant collaborations those with the MAXXI Foundation, Pecci Museum, with the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the MACRO Museum. It also collaborated with independent realities such as L’A project space of Palermo and CRIPTA 747 of Turin.

The L’A project space is a contemporary art centre born in Palermo in 2011 under the direction of two artists; Giuseppe and Vincenzo Buzzotta Schillaci. The L’A is a non-profit space for the promotion of research related to art and contemporaneity, a platform for dialogue and Exchange which opens outwards by creating bridges of connection with other realities like a container that hosts a variety of activities and where art takes many forms.
