English below ⬇️ Italiano sotto ⬇️

David With An Oar by Vladimir Tsesler has arrived in Italy, in Pisa, a historic maritime republic. Perhaps this is the best place for him. Perhaps he deserves to become a symbol of Pisa.

The story of David With An Oar began in Moscow in 2021 on the grounds of the Artplay Design Center. Remarkably, he is still standing there today, which, considering the ideology of the contemporary Russian state, is rather surprising. How do traditional values tolerate him? People say that viewers argue about why David is pink and whether he is pink at all. Is he purple? Violet? Fuchsia? Yet very few seem disturbed by the oar in his hands.

Perhaps that is because an oar held by a hero of the Italian Renaissance inevitably evokes another era: the Soviet Girl With An Oar. Maybe that is why it feels so natural, as Soviet aesthetics remain deeply embedded in the imagination of the post-Soviet viewer.

While viewers debate shades of color, the artist quietly brings together two grand visions of humanity. On one side stands Michelangelo’s David — a symbol of the free individual of the Renaissance, a person who makes his own decisions and takes responsibility for his own destiny. On the other stands the Soviet utopia, which also sought to create the ideal human being of the future: strong, healthy, and moving forward. The famous Girl With An Oar once became such a symbol. Yet she rows in a direction clearly defined by the state. But where is the contemporary David rowing?

With one simple gesture, Tsesler connects these two worlds. It turns out they have much more in common than one might think. Both eras dreamed of creating a new ideal human being, and the oar unexpectedly becomes a bridge between them.

You can now see David in Pisa at the SUGAR FREE exhibition by Vladimir Tsesler at AORTA.

Come fanno i valori tradizionali a tollerarlo?

Sugar Free.
English below ⬇️ Italiano sotto ⬇️

Билеты в био или на aortagallery.com

Yesterday, AORTA opened the Sugar Free exhibition by Vladimir Tsesler. It turned out to be incredible! Or rather, it is two exhibitions in one. One exists in physical reality, while the other unfolds in virtual space.

Within the VR layer, visitors can discover additional, even more provocative works placed alongside the physical pieces, and there are no accidental elements there: everything is interconnected. It is also where a 5-meter statue of David “appears” as yet another dimension of Tsesler’s world.

Inside the virtual space, visitors can not only observe, but also create their own reality by adding their own elements to it. And within the AORTA space itself, people can leave traces in the physical world on the gallery walls. And even more than that, they can take this trace away with them.

It is an entire experience of interaction with art, space, symbols, and oneself.

We are deeply grateful to Vladimir Tsesler for his openness and for the opportunity to realize an exhibition of his works.

We are also grateful to all the guests who came from different countries and different cities across Italy, shared this evening with us, and became part of the birth of this project.

The exhibition is open until June 28 at AORTA, Corso Italia 146, Pisa. Tickets in bio or at aortagallery.com

Now, Belarus is represented at the Venice Biennale by the independent pavilion Official. Unofficial. Belarus, organized by Belarus Free Theatre (co-founder and art director Nicolai Khalezin ), curated by Daniella Kaliada, with Natalia Kaliada MBE, co-founder of Belarus Free Theatre. The Art Newspaper called the Belarusian pavilion “the best unofficial pavilion”. The Art Newspaper is a leading international art edition founded in 1990 to provide authoritative monthly coverage of the global art market, exhibitions, and cultural policy.

And perhaps Official. Unofficial. Belarus is the most honest pavilion at the Biennale because it doesn’t represent any official structure. Official art always passes through the filter of the system, even when it claims otherwise. Official art is granted permission. Unofficial art doesn’t need it.

A very revealing story happened this year with Kazakhstan, where an artist’s work was cancelled at the last moment by the Kazakh authorities. Because an official pavilion is still the one of the state. Which means that the art presented there inevitably exists within the framework of the state’s perception of itself.

In contrast, the Belarusian pavilion is completely free from censorship. Belarus Free Theatre is a theater outside the system. Vladimir Tsesler has spent his entire creative life as an artist outside the system. And the pavilion itself exists outside the system. The culture of a nation is not created by ministries — it is created by people with a certain national identity.

For many Belarusians, there has long existed a personal Belarus within them. One that is not connected to the state, a place of residence, or any officially approved national idea. Everyone carries their own Belarus inside, and each of them has the right to exist.

You can experience the era through the eyes of one of the most independent artists Vladimir Tsesler in Italy at AORTA from May 23 to June 28. Entrance to the Opening on May 23 is free.
