Dietro queste antiche strutture si concentrano le leggende più oscure dell'epoca medievale. Si narra infatti che venissero utilizzate come celle d'isolamento per i nemici più pericolosi, lasciati svanire nel buio totale. Una leggenda millenaria sussurra che ancora oggi, tra le vecchie mura, si possano udire i lamenti di quei condannati. I racconti popolari parlano persino di vie di fuga sotterranee mai ritrovate, tunnel segreti che collegavano i castelli direttamente alle città per sfuggire agli assedi.
