Stazione di inanellamento a scopo scientifico per il monitoraggio della migrazione.

La Sezione conduce studi sulla biodiversità e la biologia di conservazione della fauna nelle Alpi, offrendo il proprio sostegno scientifico alla PAT nella conservazione, gestione e valorizzazione del territorio, per uno sviluppo ecosostenibile del Trentino. Partecipa a progetti nazionali ed internazionali di ricerca in diversi ambiti dell’ecologia terrestre, realizza monitoraggi di specie d’intere

sse conservazionistico in ambito Rete Natura 2000, e sviluppa approcci analitici utili per una valutazione quantitativa delle dinamiche e dello stato di conservazione di popolazioni e comunità di Vertebrati. Mediante la curatela delle collezioni scientifiche, contribuisce alla raccolta di reperti utili alla documentazione storica e recente della fauna sulle Alpi. Tramite la propria attività di divulgazione ambientale, formazione e didattica contribuisce alla sensibilizzazione e valorizzazione della biodiversità in ambiente alpino. 🇮🇹 Ieri, per la nostra stazione, è stato l'ultimo giorno di attività per questo 2025. Chiudiamo con circa 10.000 catture, tre delle quali straniere (l'ultima, proprio pochi giorni fa, di un lucherino con anello svedese🇸🇪) e 1500 regoli, indubbiamente tra i protagonisti della stagione. Dopo aver smontato le reti, riordinato la casa e raccolte le nostre attrezzature, quello che resta è un valico silenzioso, sospeso tra l'azzurro del cielo e le tinte calde del bosco autunnale, dove ancora per qualche settimana la migrazione degli uccelli potrà regalare un po' di poesia a quanti sapranno andarne in cerca. 🍂🪶

🇬🇧 Yesterday was our station's last day of activity for 2025. We closed with about 10,000 captures, three of which were ringed abroad (the last, just a few days ago, of a Swedish-ringed siskin 🇸🇪) and 1,500 goldcrests, undoubtedly among the season's highlights. After dismantling the nets, tidying up the house, and gathering our gear, what remains is a silent pass, suspended between the blue sky and the warm hues of the autumn forest, where for a few more weeks the migrating birds will be able to offer a little poetry to those who know how to seek it out. 🍂🪶

🇮🇹 A pochi giorni dalla fine di questa stagione di monitoraggio della migrazione, mentre le nebbie autunnali serpeggiano tra gli alberi gocciolanti d'acqua, le nostre reti intercettano un altro viaggiatore proveniente da lontano! Questa volta si tratta di una femmina di lucherino, inanellata nientepopodimenoché in Norvegia!🇧🇻
Alto sopra il valico invece, uno stormo di 14 gru vola nella tipica formazione a V, facendo riecheggiare tra le nuvole i loro inconfondibili richiami di contatto. 🪽🪽🪽
Insieme a tanti altri loro compagni di volo, ci ricordano come sul nostro pianeta tutto sia connesso, e che solo collaborando e allargando il nostro sguardo oltre in confini riusciremo a proteggere quanto di bello ospita!🌍🌈

🇬🇧 A few days before the end of our monitoring season, as autumn mists swirl among the dripping trees, another traveller from afar have bumped into our mets! This time it is a female siskin, ringed in Norway, no less! 🇧🇻
High above the pass, a flock of 14 cranes flies in their typical V-formation, their distinctive contact calls echoing through the clouds. 🪽🪽🪽
Like so many of their fellow travellers, they reminds us that everything on our planet is connected, and that only by working together and broadening our horizons beyond borders will we be able to protect all the beauty it supports!🌍🌈

🇮🇹 Negli ultimi giorni, da tutte le stazioni del progetto Alpi giungono notizie su un intenso passaggio di regoli...e anche noi, inanelliamo più di 150 individui nello stesso giorno. Con numeri come questi, non potevamo lasciarci scappare la prima ricattura straniera della stagione: una femmina di regolo inanellata in Repubblica Ceca 🇨🇿!!
Dopo tanti anni di attività, scoprire le rotte seguite da questi minuscoli uccelli di appena 5 grammi di peso (come 2 maccheroni di pasta per intenderci!) è ancora un motivo di meraviglia e ammirazione.

🇬🇧 News coming from all the stations of the Alpi project have been telling about a busy migration of goldcrests in the last days...and we, too, are ringing more than 150 individuals per day. With numbers like these, we couldn't miss the first foreign recapture of the season: a female goldcrest ringed in the Czech Republic 🇨🇿!

After so many years of activity, discovering the routes followed by these tiny birds weighing just 5 grams (the size of two pieces of pasta, to be clear!) is still a source of wonder and admiration.

🇮🇹 Il mese di ottobre, a Bocca di Caset, è qualcosa di speciale. Sospesa tra i colori dell'autunno e l'azzurro del cielo, la migrazione si manifesta in tutto il suo fascino con stormi più o meno numerosi che per l'intera giornata sorvolano il valico diretti verso sud-ovest. 🍂🧭
Rapidi e concitati, i richiami di contatto ci suggeriscono le specie di passaggio: lucherini, fringuelli, peppole...nelle giornate più favorevoli, gli individui inanellati superano i 400-500, fin'ora però non è ancora arrivata nessuna ricattura straniera.
In compenso, catturiamo un bellissimo maschio di venturone alpino, specie presente alle quote superiori di tutto l'arco alpino, ma che in autunno espande il proprio areale, raggiungendo anche i boschi di conifere delle Prealpi. 🌲🌲🌲

🇬🇧 October in Bocca di Caset is something special. Suspended between the colors of autumn and the blue of the sky, migration is showing itself in all its charm, with flocks of various sizes flying over the pass all day long, heading southwest. 🍂🧭
Fast and excited, their calls suggest the species passing through: siskins, finches, bramblings... on the best days, more than 400-500 birds are ringed, but so far no foreign recaptures have been reported.
On the other hand, we ringed a beautiful male citril finch, a species found at higher altitudes throughout the Alps, but which expands its range in autumn, reaching the Prealpinrle coniferous forests. 🌲🌲🌲

🇮🇹 I cieli turchesi, tersi e limpidi di questi giorni, uniti alle tinte calde che cominciano ad ammantare i boschi attorno al valico non ci fanno per nulla mancare il mese di settembre appena trascorso.

🍂☀️ Anche le catture ci regalano belle soddisfazioni! Nei giorni scorsi, inanelliamo un bellissimo esemplare di ballerina gialla, specie insettivora legata ai corsi d'acqua e parzialmente migratrice (con spostamenti che interessano soprattutto le popolazioni più settentrionali) e un gruppetto di organetti.

Oggi arrivano anche la prima peppola e, vista ormai sempre più rara, un migliarino di palude che, come suggerisce anche il nome, è solitamente legato ai canneti di fondovalle e anche per questo oggi in fase di forte regressione in gran parte del continente.
🏫 Tutto questo, mentre riceviamo anche la visita di una quarantina di bambini delle classi IV dell'Istituto Comprensivo Valle di Ledro e dei loro accompagnatori della Ledrense!

🇮🇹 The clear, blue skies of recent days, combined with the warm colors that are beginning to blanket the woods around the pass, make us not miss the month of September that has just passed.

🍂☀️ Our captures are also giving us great satisfaction! Some days ago, we ringed a beautiful individual of yellow wagtail, an insectivorous species linked to watercourses and partially migratory (with movements mainly affecting the northernmost populations), and a small group of common redpolls.

Today, we also ringed the first brambling and a rarer and rarer reed bunting which, as its name suggests, is usually associated with the reed beds at the bottom of the valley and, for this reason, is now in sharp decline across most of the continent.
🏫 All this, while we also welcome a visit from about 40 pupils from the Primary School of Ledro and their friends from Ledrense!

🇮🇹 Il mese di settembre si chiude con circa 2.500 catture. Ad oggi, il pettirosso risulta la specie più abbondante (658), seguito dalla balia nera (617). Subito dietro, ma ben distanziati di sono la cince more (151) e crocieri (127). In attesa del "grosso" dei migratori gregari (lucherini, fringuelli, peppole), altri migratori si prendono la scena: alcuni culbianchi, capaci di migrazioni dall'artico all'Africa sud'orientale, qualche tordela e persino i primi frosoni.
Ci rincuora anche inanellare qualche civetta capogrosso e avvistare fugacemente lungo la strada la femmina di gallo cedrone che frequenta i boschi attorno al valico.

🇬🇧 September ended with around 2,500 captures. The robin has been the most abundant species (658), followed by the European pied flycatchers (617). Closely behind, but outdistanced, are the coal t**s (151) and crossbills (127). While waiting for the gregarious birds (siskins, finches, bramblings), other migrants take the center of the stage: some Northern wheatear, capable of migrating from the Arctic to southeastern Africa, a few mistake thrushes, and even the first hawfinches. We are also heartened to ring a few boreal owls and catch a glimpse of a female capercaillie along the road, while moving towards the station.

🇮🇹 In una settimana segnata dal maltempo e dalla prima neve sul profilo dell'Adamello, seguire l'evoluzione della migrazione non è un compito facile. 🌧️🌧️🌧️

Come in gran parte delle altre stazioni del Progetto Alpi, anche a Bocca di Caset le reti restano spesso chiuse, minimizzando le catture. Nelle poche parentesi in cui il sole torna ad affacciarsi dietro alle nuvole però, inanelliamo una bella varietà di specie: piccoli migratori a corto raggio come regoli, fiorrancini, codibugnoli, luì piccoli e gli ultimi rappresentanti dei trans-sahariani (stiaccino e prispolone), forse rallentati dalla perturbazione. Ci sono anche due sparvieri! Insieme al piumaggio, un secondo indizio ci aiuta a determinare l'età: il colore dell'iride, gialla nel giovane e arancione-rossa in quello più vecchio.

🇬🇧 In a week marked by bad weather and the first snow on the Adamello mountain range, tracking the progress of migration is not easy. 🌧️🌧️🌧️

As in most of the other stations involved in the Alpi Project, the nets at Bocca di Caset often remain closed, minimizing captures. However, during the few breaks from rain, we have ringed a good variety of species: small short-range migrants such as goldcrests, firecrests, long-tailed t**s and chiffchaffs and the last of the trans-Saharan migrants (bearded reedlings and tree pipits), perhaps slowed down by the bad weather. There were also two sparrowhawks! Along with their plumage, a second clue helps us determine their age: the color of their irises, which are yellow in the young and orange-red in the older ones.

🇮🇹 Settembre, si sa, è un mese di cambiamenti nella migrazione...mentre il passaggio di qualche balia, luì grosso e beccafico segna la coda dei migratori trans-sahariani, l'aumento dei pettirossi e dei tordi ci racconta che anche i migratori a corto raggio hanno cominciato a muoversi.🍂

🪶 Il vero protagonista della settimana però è un individuo di luì forestiero!
L'areale riproduttivo di questo piccolo uc***lo di poco più di 5g di peso di trova nelle foreste siberiane tra il versante nord-occidentale degli Urali e il nord-est della Cina. La specie sverna invece nel sud-est asiatico. Da qualche anno però, gli avvistamento di individui che scelgono di spostarsi verso l'Europa occidentale è in aumento, restando però ancora una rarità...l'ultimo dato per il Caset risale al 2017!

🇬🇧 September, you know, is a month of change in migration... while the passage of a few pied-flycatchers, willow warblers and garden warblers marks the end of the trans-Saharan migrants, the increase in robins and thrushes tells us that even short-range migratory birds have begun to move. 🍂

🪶 However, the real star of the week is a yellow-browed warbler!
The breeding range of this small bird, weighing just over 5g, is in the Siberian forests, between the northwestern slopes of the Urals and northeastern China. The species winters in Southeast Asia instead.
In recent years, however, sightings of individuals choosing to move to Western Europe have increased, although they remain a rarity...the latest data for Caset dates back to 2017!

🇮🇹 Nonostante il ritmo un po' altalenante della migrazione, settembre ci regala una bella varietà di specie: cardellini, codibugnoli, scriccioli, regoli, pettirossi!

Gli uccelli però non sono le uniche "perle" che popolano il valico...durante le ore notturne, infatti, le nostre reti intercettano anche qualche pipistrello forse distratti dalla vicinanza di una preda, una bellissima sfinge testa di morto, capace di lunghe migrazioni da e verso il Nord Africa e un individuo solitario di rospo smeraldino, rappresentante di una piccola popolazione curiosamente presente e isolata nei dintorni del valico.

L'ennesima conferma di quanto l'area protetta di Bocca di Caset sia davvero un luogo speciale!

🇬🇧 Despite the somewhat fluctuating pace of migration, September brings us a wonderful variety of species: goldfinches, long-tailed t**s, wrens, goldcrests, and robins!

However, birds are not the only “tidbits” that populate the pass... During the night, our nets have also captured a few bats, perhaps distracted by the proximity of a prey, a beautiful African death's-head hawkmoth, able to migrate for long distance to and from North Africa, and a solitary European green toad, representative of a small population curiously present and isolated in the surroundings.

Yet another confirmation of how special the Bocca di Caset protected area really is!

🇮🇹 Cari amici, care amiche, vi sarete chiesti dove siamo finiti! Dopo qualche settimana di silenzio siamo pronti a riprendere i nostri aggiornamenti sull'andamento della stagione.

🌕 Con la complicità della luna crescente, tra la fine di agosto e l'inizio di settembre, abbiamo registrato un netto aumento delle balie nere, che hanno ora raggiunto quota 508 catture su un totale di 1254 inanellamenti. Seguono i pettirossi (155), solo in parte rappresentati da individui in migrazione, le cince more (94), i cui numero fanno sperare in una buona annata e i luì grossi (89).

👀 Tra le catture degne di nota, i primi lucherini, 11 stiaccini e 23 prispoloni. Grandi assenti invece le civette (nana e capogrosso) e gli allocchi.

🌦️ Le previsioni dei prossimi giorni promettono ancora pioggia, ma noi ci teniamo pronti ad approfittare di ogni sprazzo di sereno!

🇬🇧 Dear friends, you must have been wondering where we've been all this time! After a few weeks of silence, we are ready to resume our updates about the trends of the season.

🌕 With the help of the waxing moon, between the end of August and the beginning of September, we recorded a great increase in pied flycatchers, which have now reached 508 captures out of a total of 1,254 ringings. Next come robins (155), only some of which are migrating individuals, coal t**s (94), whose numbers give hope for a good year, and willow warblers (89).

👀 Noteworthy captures have included the first siskins, 11 whinchat, and 23 tree pipits. The count of pygmy, boreal and tawny owls has been still at zero...

🌦️The forecast for the coming days promises more rain, but we are ready to take advantage of every break in the clouds!

🇮🇹 Mentre l'arrivo di una nuova perturbazione rallenta il passaggio dei migratori, le catture di questi giorni ci regalano comunque qualche specie particolare: dal torcicollo con il suo piumaggio riccamente decorato, alle cutrettole, eleganti passeriformi legati agli antichi paesaggi della cerealicoltura oggi sempre più rare, fino a un simpatico terzetto di luì (bianco, verde e grosso, tutti diretti verso l'Africa subsahariana) e qualche nocciolaia vagabonda...

🇬🇧 The arrival of a new disturbance slows down the flights of migrants, but the captures of these days have given us a few special species anyway: from a wryneck with its highly camouflaging plumage, to wagtails, elegant passerines linked to the ancient landscapes of cereal farming that are now increasingly rare, to a nice trio of warblers (Western Bonelli's, wood and Willow warbler, all heading to sub-Saharan Africa) and a few stray nutcrackes...

🇮🇹 Tra uno scroscio di pioggia e l'altro, le reti aprono a singhiozzo in questi primi giorni di stagione. I migratori trans-sahariani, come balie, bigiarelle, luì verdi e grossi, sono già in movimento, anche se i discreti accumuli di grasso osservati ci dicono che con la perturbazione preferiscono spostare nei boschi di fondovalle, dove gli arbusti sono carichi di bacche. Naturalmente non mancano le specie locali, come crocieri, cince more, fiorrancini e altro ancora...piccole meraviglie naturali che lasciano a bocca aperta i nostri visitatori!

🇬🇧 Between one rain shower and another, nets have been opened intermittently in these early days of the season. Trans-Saharan migratory birds, such as pied-flycatchers, lesser whitethroats, wood and willow warblers are already on the move, although discrete fat accumulations tell us that weather instability they prefer to stop in the valley floor forests, where the berries are ripening on the shrubs. Of course, there is no shortage of local species, such as crossbills, coal t**s, firecrests and more...little natural wonders that leave our visitors speechless!
