Negli anni, ha lavorato con Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mario Merz, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Jannis Kounellis, Nicola De Maria, Emilio Prini, Gilberto Zorio, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Max Neuhaus, Lawrence Weiner, Franz West, Jan Dibbets, Bernar Venet, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Julião Sarmento, Susana Solano, Costas Varotsos, Avery Preesman, Susan Norrie, Susy Gómez, Lida Abdul, Alfredo Romano, Michele Zaza, Luisa Rabbia, Mauro Benetti, Herbert Brandl, Per Barclay, Susy Gómez, Marco Bagnoli, Marco Gastini, Alessandro Sciaraffa, Lina Fucà, Michael Biberstein, Zena el Khalil, Paolo Cirio, Nunzio. The newly produced object for the performance “The Making of”, when closed, mimics a concrete sculpture that appears in the works by Makhacheva: Ц|умихъ (“Tsumikh” - Avar for “At the Eagle’s”), 2023, and Ясалъул яс (“Yasalul yas” - Avar for “The Daughter of the Daughter of”), 2024. When opened, the object reveals the process of this personal monument’s creation and its internal contents.

“This oscillation between the visible and the invisible recurs throughout the “Daughter of the Daughter Of”, in which we watch as two busts are created, a smaller one of Tsadasa, her great-grandfather, and a larger one of Rasul. They are each meant to enshrine the memory of each man, but instead they become a story about occlusion and the kinds of relationships that are not known from the outside. In one beautiful moment, the bust of Tsadasa fits inside Rasul, like they are a pair of matryoshka dolls. The occlusion reverses the gender roles of this masculine lineage – the son carries inside him the body of his father, like a mother carries a child – while also imitating how they are known publicly, in the way that the name Rasul Gamzatov contains that of his father (a public linking that Taus Makhacheva is excluded from). After this scene, the two are then re-crated and made into a modernist block, a third sculptural iteration that we could read as Makhacheva’s own minimalist or conceptual avatar – and indeed it quietly alludes to her mother, as its height and depth are comprised of the measurements taken from her head and shoulders, though this fact is as invisible to the viewer as her mother herself is in the name Taus Makhacheva.”

“Generally speaking, the difference between memory and history is clear. A grandfather reading you a story: memory. A poet composing a national anthem: history. One is important to you; the other has public significance. One is buried in your mind; the other out on public display. But in this exhibition Taus Makhacheva reconsiders this assumption, looking at what happens when one’s own memory of someone bumps up against a publicly held memory, in this case of her grandfather Rasul Gamzatov, a famous poet in Soviet Dagestan. The distinction between memory and history, she suggests, is in fact streaked with power imbalances: memory is the dialect to history’s language; the also-ran; the vernacular; the unofficial; the forgettable. Seeing, Touching, Imbibing wants to reverse this dynamic – or at least, sound the alarm so that we might think of memory and history as one.”

Seeing, Touching, Imbibing
25.10.2025 – 24.01.2026

The exhibition Seeing, Touching, Imbibing by Taus Makhacheva invites visitors to examine the architecture of memory. Traversing the space of intimacy and relations, the artist attempts to reclaim the image of her grandfather and poet from its instrumentalisation by larger political narratives. Makhacheva dissects how histories are built and what monuments conceal, posing a crucial question that resonates through each piece: who truly has the right to shape history, and how does it live, breathe, and transform in the hands of others?

THE WORK BEHIND THE WORK: FRANCESCO MANACORDA IN CONVERSATION WITH TAUS MAKHACHEVA

Francesco Manacorda, Director Castello di Rivoli .manacorda
Taus Makhacheva, Artist

Artissima 2025

A conversation between artist Taus Makhacheva and curator Francesco Manacorda reframes artistic creation as the outgrowth of the interplay between structures and systems. Makhacheva’s studio practice actively dismantles the myth of the solitary genius, revealing the complex web of collaborators, invisible labour, and emotional undercurrents that sustain creative work.
