The story of the German Occupation of Jersey is as compelling as it is strange to think that this small area of Britain was Occupied by the Nazis and forced to fly the Swastika for five dark years. Dug deep into the hillside within St Peter’s Valley, the Tunnels were originally intended to be a barracks and ammunition store for the occupying forces. Today they tell the story of the Occupation, looking at how all sides coped under such extreme conditions and examining the daily dilemmas that were faced by island residents and the authorities, whether Jersey, British or German. Ever wondered how a huge underground complex like Jersey War Tunnels was kept warm?

Hidden away inside the Tunnels is the Boiler Room – an essential part of the infrastructure planned to keep the complex functioning.

When the underground site was ordered to be converted into a casualty clearing station in 1944, heating and hot water would have been vital for the wards, treatment areas and people working below ground.

The Boiler Room gives us another glimpse into the sheer scale of what was being created here. This wasn’t simply a network of tunnels carved into the hillside – it was being developed into a functioning underground facility, complete with the services needed to support it.

It’s one of those spaces that can be easily overlooked as you explore, but stop for a moment and take a closer look.

There’s a story around almost every corner at Jersey War Tunnels.

In a series of directives at the beginning of October 1941, Hi**er ordered an enormous fortification programme.

The defences would form an essential part of the Atlantic Wall, a solid line of coastal defence stretching 1,700 miles from the North Cape of Norway to the Pyrenees that was virtually complete in two and a half years.

Far in excess of their military significance, the Channel Islands used one twelfth of the reinforced concrete for the entire Atlantic Wall.

The scale of Jersey War Tunnels can inspire awe, but the way the complex was built must never be separated from its story.

Thousands of forced and slave labourers from countries across Europe were brought to Jersey and compelled to work on German fortifications in brutal conditions.

Today, the Tunnels tell their stories and ensure what happened is never forgotten.
