In Japan, autumn begins in earnest in November, and Seisonkaku is a lovely place to enjoy this part of the season! Seisonkaku was originally built as a luxurious retirement villa, so naturally, the beauty of the garden here is no accident.
First, though, let’s take a closer look not at the view, but the viewing point. The covered deck looking out on the Garden of Horsetails features a clever architectural design that offers shade from the sun or cover from the rain, without any support pillars across a 20-meter span. It’s easy to miss what’s not there, especially with a garden like this to appreciate.
Perhaps the flashiest star of autumn at Seisonkaku is the Japanese maple tree at the entrance. This tree is over a century old, and erupts into brilliant red each year. It’s not far from Yamazaki-yama Hill in Kenrokuen Garden, also known for its maple trees, making for two great destinations for autumn color fans.
And don’t forget our special exhibition, running through December! Come see beautiful old calligraphy, like this poem on a card topped with silk fabric, as well as other items with ties to the imperial court and aristocratic life back then.
