“Eri Morimoto: contour map # water surface”
Fri. June 19 - Sat. July 18, 2026
Born in Osaka in 1978 and an alumna of Kyoto City University of Arts Graduate School, Morimoto garnered early acclaim, receiving the Mayor’s Award at the Kyoten (Kyoto Exhibition) in 2001 and being selected for the prestigious VOCA Exhibition in 2008. Based in the Kansai region, she has since maintained a consistent and active practice, steadily building a strong following among domestic and international collectors.
Morimoto’s practice deconstructs and reconfigures sensory perceptions—the humidity, scent, and ephemeral quality of light, alongside the pure visual pleasure experienced when encountering landscapes and flora—guided by her own rigorous methodology. Her signature "contour map" series borrows the cartographic term for lines of equal elevation, reinterpreting them as an intersection of bodily sensation and the invisible boundaries within everyday life. Through this approach, she establishes a unique coordinate system to perceive and navigate the world.
Under the title "contour map # water surface," this exhibition debuts a new body of work inspired by the fluid surfaces of lakes and seas, and the shifting nature of waterlines. Anchored by pieces formed through the rhythmic accumulation and documentation of painted dots, the presentation also introduces new experimental directions, including drawings and works incorporating sea glass.
By exploring the liquid thresholds of water surfaces and waterlines, this exhibition marks a compelling evolution in the "contour map" series. We warmly invite you to experience these new works in person at our gallery.
